We are looking for some good repair mistake and blunder stories to feature in the RockAuto newsletter (we know you have some)! Tell us about your most infamous auto repair blunder or unconventional fix. Use your woe to help others avoid similar mistakes or share off-the-wall solutions that worked (at least for a while!).

Please e-mail your story to Flamur@RockAuto.com. Include your mailing address and let us know if you would like a RockAuto T-Shirt (please let us know your shirt size) or Hat if we publish your story. See the T-Shirts and Hats under Tools & Universal Parts in the catalog.

The story will be credited using only your first name and your vague geographic location (state, province, country, continent, etc.) so you can remain semi-anonymous!

I personally didn't find them funny..... but........

pulled the trans on Dad's 03 Silverado with 180k miles. Had a guy I worked with rebuild it, put itback in and away he goes. Calls me about 6 weeks ago, he's 30 miles from home and has lost 2nd, 4th and reverse. Great. I know what the problem is, but I wasn't excited about pulling that thing back out. Get it out, back up to the guy I had rebuild it, get it back in a week and a half, get some help to install, bolt it up, run the bolts down on the bell housing and then move on to the Torque Conv, and it won't move. Fuck. I forgot to make sure it was fully seated before bolting it down. Back the bolts off, get the TC up further, bolt it back down. Get everything reinstalled. Fill it with fluid. Fire it up. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. This thing is only going as far as I can push it. Shit.

So I text the guy that built it. He asks if we have oil pressure. Pop the line loose at the radiator, fire the truck up and it's bone dry. Not a good sign. Now, remember that last line about what I did at the radiator, it's important later. So at this point, we know the oil pump is junk. Sheared the tabs off when I hamfisted the trans back up in there. So, I pull the trans out again. Lose 1 of the 2 clips that hold the trans lines to the trans. Just flat vanished. Get a new oil pump. Take the bell housing off, remove front pump, put new gasket and new pump back on it, put back together. By now, I have broken down and bought an $80 transmission jack from our friends at Harbor Freight and a 36" 3/8" extension to help get to the upper bellhousing bolts. Get the thing reinstalled. Get the starter on, the y-pipe on and I'm bolting in the crossmember when my hand brushes against something that shouldn't be there.... I forgot the dipstick tube. Guess what, it can't go in with the trans lines and y-pipe in the way. Y-pipe can't come off until the crossmember is removed. So I spend an hour removing and reinstalling the same parts for the 4th time. Get it together, fill with fluid. start it up........

..... and it moves! YAY! So I run it up and down the "main street". Shifts great. Pull it back in, check fluid, add another 3/4 of a quart to finish the fill. Shut the hood, head back down the road for the final test drive. I get almost a mile from my house and glance in the mirror. I see a white smokescreen completely fogging the road behind me. Oh no...... as I slow for the turn around the smell hits me. Burning trans fluid. Shit. What did I forget? Did I not get the trans line snapped in down below? So I get it turned around, and baby it back home. Get it halfway into the garage when it completely stops moving. Open the door, and push it in. Shut it down, pop the hood. Guess what I'm seeing? Here... let me remind you:

Yep. I had pushed the line back into the radiator but never put the metal E-clip back on. It made it just shy of 3 miles before popping loose, hosing the entire engine bay with 8 quarts of ATF. Yes.... 8 quarts. It holds 10 for a total capacity. 2 gallons of ATF, covering the entire passenger side of the hood, engine, frame rail etc. Including the starter. Remember this one next.....I run down to Walmart (only placse left open at 10pm), grab 2 gallons of ATF, go home, refill, move, refill, and top off. Took it for a 20 mile drive and it ran perfect. Now, the truck had been sitting in the garage in the extreme cold for almost 3 weeks now, so when it was slow to start, I just figured the battery was a little low. No biggie.

Now, it's been gone for a full 2 weeks. Get a call from Dad. "Hey, did you pull the starter the last time you had the trans out?" I'm like.... yeah, why? "Well, the main cable was a little loose, but it is completely covered in trans fluid and it no longer works." So now it's time for a new starter.

That's just the trans saga on the Silvy. The good thing is Dad got a nicely rebuilt 4L60 built to Trailblazer SS 6.0L spec for his 5.3. Thing will run forever now. It cost him $850 total in parts and an old shotgun (for labor) for the whole ordeal. And I can now take one out of a 2wd Silv/Sierra in my fucking sleep.

Next saga will be the Tahoe that sat in my garage for 3 months......
