I've had my 2011 Elantra Touring for almost exactly a year.
What I've noticed pretty much since the moment I drove off the dealer lot is that when I accelerate, especially with several people riding and/or uphill, I hear what I think is called "Engine pinging" or "valves tapping", i.e. this metallic noise similar to when you bang together small metal balls. I remember hearing the same noise on my old Toyota years ago when I would try to accelerate in a gear that was too high. It was louder then but I am still concerned that maybe Elantra's engine is not tuned properly. I am about to take it for an oil change to the dealer so might asked them about it then, but I was just curious whether many people have had the same experience. If so, were you able to fix it? Thanks much! -------------------- A proud member of the club.

My 2008 Elantra HD does the same thing. The dealer under warranty performed a fuel injector cleaning service and it did nothing.

I got the same noise on mine (2011 Touring)
Dealer did injector cleaning and other stuff for about 150$ (not under warranty) sounded smoother when at the dealer but the next morning the same noise as always came up. I can actually hear this noise when starting the car on idle(I have remote starter so i hear it when getting to my car) -------------------- A proud member of the club.

The most likely culprit is that your using a low octane gas. As a previous poster said, increase to 93 octane premium grade gas.
To do a quick test, just add 1 bottle of octane booster to your tank and top off with 92 or 93 octane gas. The problem should go away. In the future just fill up with premium - no need to use octane booster on an ongoing basis. -------------------- A proud member of the club.

Pretty sure the motor was designed to run on regular, it shouldn't need anything more to run smoother/better. And if that's the case then it's a design flaw and owners with this problem should be compensated for it.
See how it sounds with fresh oil. -------------------- Hopes and dreams, ways and means

I've heard that noise when each of my cars was a little low on oil. Since so many of you are reporting a similar concern, maybe it's not that simple.

In previous generation elantras it was due to non-OEM oil filters. So use Hyundai oil filters and try putting in a heavier weight oil to see if that helps.
