Let's post a list here of our detailing routines (products, techniques and frequency) as a reference for newbies and other members alike!

I'll start:

I try to wash my car about once every 10 days, if possible. I use Blue Coral Car Wash liquid I purchased at Walmart, nothing fancy but it seems to work. I spray the tires with Stoner's "More Shine, Less Time" every wash. I do my windows and all glass with Stoner's about once a month. The black trim get's a coat of lotion (either Meguiar's or Mother's mostly) once a month. The interior gets the 303 treatment about once every month or so. I try to regularly "shake out" the mats so dirt doesn't get ground in.... and vacuum monthly. I use Klasse or Pinnacle leather conditioner about 3 times a year.

As far as waxing goes, I use several products...Meguiars NXT, 3M Perfect-IT, P21S. I love the Poorboy's sealant. Basically I try to keep several coats of wax on my car at all times. This means waxing fairly often... no more than two months between coats.

I also clay on occasion (Mother's California system) but only 3 times in two and a half years so far.

The results have been very satisfying.... and it really isn't all that much work.

i dont know if there is enough space here for my detail routine. lol. weekly: vacuum, wipe down interior, windows, power wash undercarraige, wash and chamois dry with eagle 1 wax-as-u-dry. this stuff works great between waxing, dress tires, dry doorjams, dry rims
monthly: same as above, but 2 fresh coats of shine master polish www.wizardsproducts.com , buff with microfiber towel
3 months: weekly washing, clay bar entire car. then 2 fresh coats of shine master polish.
i wheel out the entire car yearly. clay bar, then wheel-out, d/a polish, then hand wax.
time it takes me to finish:
weekly- about an hour
monthly- about 1 1/2hr to 1 3/4hr
3 months- about 2 1/4hr
wheel-out- 3hrs
for car shows- 4 hrs night before at work, then 1 1/2hrs when i get to show in the morning.

all this work pays off. i have 53,465 miles on my 2002 gt. my paint looks crystal clear. just as good as our brand new cars at work.
i shortened alot of this, to save time and space. thanks guys/girls

For me, it usually is this:

Weekly; wash/drypaying attention to the smoothness of the surface and scratches/nicks and repairing those as needed and vacuuming.
Monthly, in addition to the weekly activities, I add the windows.
3 months; I remove the front end cover and wash the car. If the car needs wax, I then apply it at this time, but usually, a quick detail is done.
6 months. I usually thoroughy clean and wax the car, especially after winter or after summer. Most of the time, this is the most of my activities, but if the car need more, I will do a polish.
Yearly; I make sure the surface feels clean. Usually it does, but if the car needs a polish job with the PC, I will apply the polish with the machine. I last polished my car last summer and it still feels nice and smooth. I don't think it needs any more polishing with the machne this year.

I have been using the Dupont wax, which likes heat and to be rubbed in (by hand). This wax does keep the dirt off the car unless it really gets dirty.

I guess it is pretty much different for everyone but this is what I do:

-Every weekend (mostyl sunday) wash the car and use a spray wax on the car afterwards. Inside vacumed, armor all-ed etc. Engine bay scrubed and polished.
-Every 3 months hand wax
-Every 6-8 months clay the car

And alot of other stuff that I do but just neglected to metion because I cant give my secrets away LOL!

hmm... I'm still trying to work out what to do, at what intervals.

I better work something out soon. My Elantra scored her very first rock chip on her hood last weekend. angry-hitselfonhead.gif

I've been consistent with washing and cleaning the interior.

* Remove car mats, shake out and vacuum. vacuum all carpet surfaces. (including the trunk) Do a once over with a magnetic hand glove (picks up dust particles really well) and followed by a small amount of mat armor-all on the dash.

* When drying her off I use a large chamois for the roof down to the black door trim and then pull out a smaller chamois to finish the lower part of the job.

* I find that some hot water in a spray bottle, wiped down with a lint free cloth gets the windows looking crystal clear in no time.

* After all that I use hot water in a spray bottle & a rag to clean the alloys and remove all that carbon and dirt build-up.

* Finished off with some tire shine & another stack of photos with the digital camera rofl.gif

Because I'm very new to all this detailing I'll probably get a detailer out just to pamper her.

One way to prevent rock chips is to get the 3M Paint Protection Film, which is a thick piece clear film that is installed as a invisible bra. I installed that a month after I bought the car, and also have the black vinyl bra I got from Hyundai. The invisible bra extends past the one that I got from Hyundai, and can be custom cut to your specifications.

Colin, I'm very interested. Where would I find out more about this 3M product?

Is it hard to apply? does it need to be done professionally?

Sorry about bombarding you with questions, it does sound like a good product.

This is the product that I have on my car. Frankly, it is a bitch to put on correctly because cars are not square and flat. The concave curves and bodylines cars have make getting it on without wrinkling up makes it hard. I can do it, but it takes about 6 hours just to cover the front end and have it lay down tight with the curves the car has. The adhesive on it is real sticky and will not let it come off once it is dry. We install it by cleaning the surface of all contaminates, wax and whatever is on the paint. Water is applied to make it easier to stretch and fit it on the car. Once the water dries, it is on there.

It is able to withstand rocks and most harsh abrasions. I have it on both the front and the back end of my car.

Thanks for the information. If the price suggests how good the product is, i'm definitely going to see if anyone knows about it down here.

My uncle owns his down paint and body shop, Ill ask if he can help me out tracking down this product. The Elantra isn't going anywhere any time soon so I'll have to invest something into keeping her looking in show room condition.

Thanks again for the information colin, it's greatly appreciated.

When I installed it on my car, I had a lot of teflon wax on the car and it did not stick at all. I did get it to stick finally and after a while, I noticed it really started to hold very tightly to the panels. It is put on the headlights, foglights, bumper, fender and hood. I also have a strip of it on the top of the rear bumper.

You will soon find out that the "paint" on the bumpers is not a paint at all, it is a vinyl sticker that chips VERY easily.

^ Already have that too. some how i've scored some neat looking scratches on the rear bumper and I've never taken it to a shopping carpark. Black is a nice colour but too much work to keep in good condition.

I'll do my best to keep it in good condition the Elantra is hanging around for a long time.
