Other than the visible changes, what's different under the hood from a 2007 to 2012 Touring? I know it definitely has a better feel to it when I drive but that's about it.

The Touring wasn't released until 2008 as a 2009 model here in North America. Basically it's unchanged through 2012.

The 2007 model was the "HD" sedan and that was a different model completely. The Touring is the "FD" and is the US version of the European i30 wagon.

You'll see a brand new Touring hatchback (based again on the new i30) here in 2012 as a 2013 model and this is a big upgrade.

While the 09-12 Touring is a different model designation than the HD (2007-2010) it is the same platform (also shared with the Forte). While the Elantra got an updated platform, the Touring is lagging behind a bit, so the new platform will hit the Touring in MY 2013. It's confusing, and, IMO, if they're going to use the Elantra name for both they should keep them in sync (to make it seem like a trim option of the same car) or they should name it something different.

So, to answer your question, the difference, other than cosmetic things, between your 07 HD and your 12 Touring is very little. Same engine, same transmission, nothing of note unless someone else knows of something significant.

Hey-BMW often brings out a totally new sedan and holds off on the other body styles til the next MY. It is a bit odd but...

That i30 looks more like a regular Elantra with a hatchback, rather than a wagon. Looks real stylish. But the hatch doesn't open right to the bottom of the trunk like the Touring does (one of the reasons why I went with the Touring).

Looks like the same drivetrain as in my Spectra. I wonder if the gearing's the same?

Too bad H didn't see fit to slip the 6-speed in there. Next model I guess.
