Another thing to note. Silver/gray is so.....everywhere. I see you replaced the Sonata pic with a red one and it's much better looking...any color other than gray for the Optima? I think that blue or green would be nice on it.

I Like them both so I'm no help to helping you pick. I'd get either one. They both look completely different, but I like both of their looks.

The new Forte and Optima designs seem very Acura/Audi-ish, while the new Elantra and Sonata remind me of Mercedes and Lexus designs. I think that this tends to follow with the intended separation of the brands. Younger, sportier drivers tend to lean toward Acura and Audi, while Mercedes and Lexus shoppers tend to be a little older.

I've thought for a while that my next car would be an Audi. That thought might change. I like what I'm seeing here.

The Audi connection is very apparent considering Kia's chief designer, Peter Schreyer was a former Audi designer. He penned the original Audi TT.

Esp since it will also get the 274hp 2.0t GDI engine too netting 22mpg-34mpg.

From Wikipedia:

QUOTE
As with its Hyundai Sonata sibling, the Optima's lineup has been replaced with a universal GDI 2.4 4-cylinder engine, either powered by a 6-speed automatic transmission with Eco dash display, or by a standard 6-speed manual transmission that is only standard on the LX model. Sales are slated to begin in Fall 2010. The new K5 came out on April 29th, 2010 in the South Korean market.

The new Optima retains its trim lines of the base LX, upscale EX, and sporty SX models. Standard equipment include a slew of advanced safety features such as ESC and ABS brakes, as well as Sirius Satellite Radio, cooled glove box, iPod connectivity, and handsfree Bluetooth phone operation. EX models receive Kia's new UVO infotainment system by Microsoft with integrated backup camera, and Proximity Key with Push-Button Start. SX models add a rear spoiler, metal pedals, black hybrid metal and carbon insert trim, paddle shifters, and illuminated scuff plates. A panoramic moonroof, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, and navigation system is also available.

A Hybrid model and Turbo model has been announced, and is predicted to arrive in early 2011. In addition, a wagon version will hit European markets, and two-door coupe version may come to the U.S. at a later date. [6] The turbo model will have the same powertrain as the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. The turbocharged model will have 274HP and 269lb-ft of torque in the North American model. [7]The car is estimated to obtain 34MPG HWY.

From the carspyshots link above, I see paddle shifters and a bunch of steering wheel-mounted controls, a smartly laid out center console stack with auto climate control, and a tastefully done leather boot over the auto shifter lever.

Kia's gonna have a winner with this one.

Is there any kind of price difference between the optima and the sonata?

Historically, the Sonata is more expensive by ~$1-2K. The 2010 models start at about the same price, but the Sonata has a higher top end due to trim options. It doesn't seem to me that one is being branded as the cheaper of the two, so I would bet that these will be close in price.

I think I'd need to see the Kia in person to truly respond. I picked the Sonata, because I absolutely love it. The new Optima sure is a fine looking car though. For me I was looking for more of an upscale/luxury yet sporty looking sedan. I think the Sonata fits the bill.

Local dealership just got thier first one in. Haven't looked any closer than a quick drive by to and from work but it strikes me as a very low and wide car.
