DETROIT (AP) — Kia Motors Corp. is recalling more than 58,000 Spectra compact cars registered in cold-weather states because the gas tanks could drop to the ground and cause a fire.

The recall affects Spectra LD models from the 2004 to 2007 model years in 20 states and Washington, D.C., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website Friday.

Not good, but it happens.

So the straps holding the tank in place can rust and cause the tank to drop.

Didn't the straps get treated at the factory with a rubberized coating or a weather resistant paint? Or is that just a dealer option to get you to pay more for a car off the lot?

It sounds like the screws or clips holding it all together of some sort were just cheap recycled steel.
