ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Elantra AD/MD/UD General _ life beyond 100,000 miles

I recently surpassed 100,000 miles with my 2013 MD. I am curious if anyone on here has experienced any unusual problems with their car after the warranty expired. Any surprises?

Hopefully there are a few owners that will chime in soon (I don't own an MD).

I'm amazed you've amassed 100,000+ miles on a 2013! signs-wow.gif

100k+ in ~2 years? I'm guessing some sort of regional sales rep? Yowza. I thought I collected miles like Imelda Marcos collected shoes (211,5xx on my 03, 88k on it when I bought it 2/08).

Mine is a '12 and just under 50K . And I thought I drove a lot !!

I put 72xxx on my '12 from Sept2011-May2013. ...and I thought I drove 'a lot' too ... wow My '14 has 20xxx on it now, purchased June2014.

With my '12 GL the only problems I ever encountered were minor electrical ones. The front driver side heated seat stopped working a couple times untill it was replaced. So did the driver side heated mirror. I had a new mirror ready to be installed at the dealership. It was warm out so I waited for my next service... then we had our accident. No problems with my '14 GLS so far other than the sunroof not opening fully on it's own. Had to be reset.

Last week, I was leaving the dealership after having the oil changed (114,××× miles) and the check engine light came on. The next day, I went to AutoZone and had them check the code/codes. It had one code, P2096. Apparently, Hyundai has a TSB for this error code. It is a false error code requiring a computer update. The dealership is charging me $120.00 for this update. If there is a software problem, shouldn't that be covered by Hyundai?

Has anyone dealt with this problem?

The problem there might be that you're past 100,000 miles, so your warranty is gone. I would think they ought to cover it, but if it's only a TSB and not a full-on recall your hands might be tied there.

I believe i can recall updates in both 2012 and 2013 to my 2011 limited, my car was still under warranty at that point, but both times the dealer came out and readily mentioned it to me. The only other TSB i had done at my own request was for a rattling exhaust, solved by clamping the heat shield IIRC.

My car now sits at 104k+ miles (168k+ kms) and aside from oil changes i had only changed the windshield wipers and sparks until about a month ago, when the rear brakes needed to be done as the passenger side was sticking and wore down prematurely but the fronts still have good meat on them and i suspect will last another 20-30k. I also changed tires about a month ago, my first set as i run dedicated winter Michelin X-Ice up here in the great white north tongue.gif, I stuck with Continental Contiprocontact for my other 3 season needs because i like the way they performed, however i went to 225/45/17 instead and it was the best choice ever.

As i see it, this car has been rock solid.

The update was completed, at my expense. It would have been covered under warranty.

My satellite radio quit working this morning. Called Sirius for help and they could not fix the problem. They suggested that I go to the dealer. I tried the reset button on the dash, but it didn't work. The tech at the dealership said that it is most likely the antenna. I'm not so sure, because my navigation system still works. They are more than happy to trouble shoot the problem for $12.00 per hour, since I am out of warranty. Of course I am.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

There's a gentleman on GRM with almost 200k on his 11. He finally replaced the front pads at 192.

Posted by: Gotoguy Jul 2 2015, 08:23 PM

Zero issues with my satellite radio thus far, however i do not have navigation so i can't draw a direct comparison as to whether or not it would be the antenna.

Posted by: 13ABLtd Jul 8 2015, 04:39 AM

Two days after sitting in the garage, the satellite radio is working. I suppose it could be the shark fin antenna. It possibly got moisture inside and it evaporated? I'm going to the dealership in the morning to have it checked out. I searched around the Web and found that several Hyundai models have had problems with water/moisture getting inside the antenna housing.

My car has never been through a car wash. I hand wash it, however, it has been through a few monsoons. I hope this doesn't become a recurring problem.

Posted by: 13ABLtd Jul 9 2015, 05:38 PM

The service advisor said that since the radio is working, they can't troubleshoot the problem. I asked about checking the antenna for evidence of water/moisture and I was told to wait until it quits working again. Hopefully, that will be a long time.

Posted by: Gotoguy Jul 11 2015, 12:55 AM

Yes lets hope so!

However i have taken my car through the car wash many times, never done by hand tongue.gif and i have also been through many monsoons. I am more inclined to think it could be the slightest of shorts somewhere, but then again i could be wrong.

Recently, the HVAC motor has started to make noise. It sounds as if it is out of balance or the bushings are worn. What's strange is that when turning right, the noise becomes louder and when turning left, the noise goes away. It is very frustrating. Even when listening to the radio, I can hear it , ever so subtly, squeaking away. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? I tried searching around and haven't found much. Is this easily fixed on these cars?

Posted by: Gotoguy Aug 30 2015, 08:40 AM

Wish i could add some insight but seeing as how my HVAC is only used 3-4 months per year i am very unlikely to see an issue like this. I am guessing you must use it quite a lot, it's unfortunate that it seems like it will be an more serious issue sometime soon.

On the flip side i have recently crossed 182k+ kms (113k+ miles) and i am still without a single issue, i could not be more pleased.

Sounds more like a wheel bearing problem than a Hvac motor problem
But, if it is the Hvac motor then they are fairly easy to replace

Posted by: 13ABLtd Aug 31 2015, 01:06 AM

Definitely not a wheel bearing. The sound goes away when I turn the fan off or increase the fan speed.

Posted by: avisitor Aug 31 2015, 04:07 PM

The blower motor is fairly easy to replace.
It looks like a squirrel cage.
If the noise doesn't bother you yet then just live with it until it does
Fixing a hard failure feels better than replacing something that just makes a little noise.
Well, unless one is particular about that type of stuff.
I am just cheap .. not lazy.

I've got a 2011 Limited and I'm rounding out 97k on mine. 20k of which I compiled in the first month and a half.
I have since changed jobs a couple of times moving closer and closer to home. Now I carpool and only drive once every 3 weeks, so the miles are staying way lower than before.

I'm glad I saw this thread though, because I have had that check engine light on for some time now with that code (I used my own OBD reader).
I didn't know it was a malfunction... I'll make sure and get the car in for the warranty coverage before I hit the 100k mark.

I did have a problem with my radio about a year or two ago. I had the same thing... the navigation was working fine, but I wasn't getting any sound out of the speakers. The radio was getting reception, my aux inputs were all working.
So, I took the dash apart... pulled the unit out, unplugged everything, blew it off like an old Nintendo game, and plugged it all back in. I haven't had any issues with it since.

The only annoyance at this point is what I think is a loose heat shield or something. My car makes this metallic pan rattling noise on cold starts... and then goes away once the car warms up. Anyone else heard this?

Posted by: Gotoguy Oct 20 2015, 08:20 PM

I also had this metallic rattling sound on my 2011 Limited and it was a loose heat shield. It was however not at startup as you describe but during driving when i passed 1500-1700 rpms. There was a TSB to install clamps on the heat shield, this was the only TSB i requested for my car during the warranty period, which completely solved the issue.

My car has recently crossed 120k miles and remains trouble free.

My son's 2005 Elantra just turned over 100,000 miles. The only problem after all these years is the driver's door handle broke off. It has had zero mechanical problems and he hopes to have it another 100,000 miles.

Mine isn't an MD but an XD. That said it is time to trade her in on Saturday Morning. 118,000 miles & 12 years of pretty trouble free driving has taken it's toll. AC is done, lifter tapping and the starter is starting to groan. I pick up my used 2010 1 owner Jetta TDI wagon with 6 speed manual, leather, nav, SAT/HD radio, panoramic sunroof and nice 5 spoke alloy rims on Saturday morning. Sadly the Newer GT's don't have the room in them that XD did. Hard to fit 4 dogs.

Sad to hear that you're parting with yours, but it sounds like you're picking up a decent replacement.

Posted by: flcerberus Oct 31 2015, 03:46 PM

Yeah, no regrets it was a great car.

Posted by: 13ABLtd Nov 24 2015, 09:35 PM

I am now about to hit 132,000 and have absolutely nothing new to complain about. The satellite radio is working fine, the blower motor noise hasn't gotten worse, and I'm still getting 36-37mpg.

What a car!

Posted by: Gotoguy Feb 5 2016, 07:39 PM

So I made it to just over 209,000kms (approx. 130k miles) trouble free and then my spouse and i decided a change was in order, the elantra however will remain in my family as my mother and brother will take up joint ownership. I will do my best to keep this thread updated with any issues should they arise.

I really enjoyed my time with that car and what a great choice it was for a first car, hopefully my family will continue to enjoy it as much as i did.

I think the blower motor noise must be a common problem on UD/MDs. My wife and I both have 2013s. Mine just crossed 105k miles on the odo and has made the noise for a while. Her's has just under 45k and has just started making the noise. Other than a front axle issue I had early on that was replaced under warranty I've had no issues with my Elantra and my wife has had no issues with hers. My commute is 90% highway driving with light traffic (read: minimal braking) so I've yet to change any of the pads. The rears need to go first but probably have another 10-15k on them. The fronts, who knows. They're no where close to needing replacement.
