Repairing Paint Scratches, How do I fix this?? Options

Calling all expert paint/detail pros!!

I have a few nasty rock dings and scratches that I'd like to take care of myself.

How do I do it?

Here's one (the worst) where I think a rock got me just above the drivers door. It's about 1/2" long and it now has some wax in it.



Do I need to: ??
1) clean it out
2) fill it in with touch-up paint
3) wet-sand
4) re-clear coat

It depends on how you want it done. Using touchup paint is 1 option and the cheapest, but a perfect repair is to feather out the area, prime and paint it.

I would suggest getting the factory touchup paint and dabbing that on a little, waiting an hour, then adding more paint until it is filled. Using an artist brush gives you better results and easier application of the material. I also recommend a couple light coats of primer as well for this area.

Gonzo, if you never have done this before you may cause more damage and have to get the panel repainted.

If you want to try the above suggestions, mask the area off after you clean and remove the wax! Place the tape 1/8" off the outside edges of the damage area. This way if it gets out of hand you minimize the damage. Wait 24 hours before you wet sand and use ccngthr method with a thin artist brush to apply the touch up paint.

That scratch is not the easiest to fix, so be prepared just in case it doesn't come out too good.

I'm not recommending a wetsand. I think the clear is too thin to work with. Just touch it up with the artist brush.
