A few weeks ago I noticed excessive oil consumption, about half of a quart every one hundred miles. As well as occasional black smoke coming from the exhaust. There's no visible oil leaks. So I assumed the one hundred and ninety thousand mile piston rings were starting to show their age. The compression test showed that all cylinders were between 210-215 psi. So one would assume that the rings are actually in decent condition. Now I believe the valve stem seals are worn. I figured if I were to install new valve stem seals, I would rather install them on the better flowing solid lifter Beta 2 non-cvvt cylinder head. So I acquired a 2002 Elantra head for fifty dollars.
And then I figured If I were to take the time to install another head, I may as well take a bit more time and install a decked Beta 2 head with head work. I'm about six hours into this project and probably have another ten to go. I'll need to get an extension for the Dremel. It will probably be a few weeks until I will be able to finish and install the head. Here are the before and the halfway finished exhaust ports: -------------------- 2000 Elantra
