Although this car has already been shown in Korean spec, this is our North American production car.

I'm very disappointed in what Hyundai has done here. While the styling is good it isn't much of an improvement over the outgoing model. The interior is a step back IMO. Yes it has great features and tech and hopefully it will handle better than past models. But... those drivetrain two drivetrain choices...

New ECO 1.4 Turbo motor producing 128hp and 158 ft/lbs. of torque (mated to 7 Speed DCT)
Standard 2.0 engine with 148hp and 132 ft/lbs. of torque

While the 2.0 is ok as a base engine, I am shocked they are using a 1.4 liter turbo as the option. This thing only has 128 hp. Sure it has 158 ft./lbs. of torque, but still... this isn't what we were expecting. I was hoping for some sort of truly sporty Elantra. After all, even the Forte has a 201hp turbo option.

This car will have trouble competing against the new Civic and the Mazda 3. Looks like Hyundai set their sights on stuff like the Corolla and Sentra. Ho Hum.

They surely aren't targeting enthusiasts. I guess their target was fuel economy and being a decent grocery getter with some nice tech. Nothing wrong with that I guess, but...

Sorry, Hyundai. Color me bored. Why are you always disappointing the enthusiast crowd?

See Mitch the biggest problem is Hyundai does see this car as an enthusiast car. Like you said, to them its just a good cheap car.We as a club will see it different because we love the cars. I haven't see it in person yet, but its not to bad from what it see.
Now the eco turbo is a cool idea. Could be fun to mod.

It is pretty vanilla, isn't it?

Also, call me old-school but I HATE the push toward LCD everything. Nav screens, radios, even instrument clusters. Can't I have dials? Please?

I don't understand why Hyundai... after all this time, hasn't come out with a performance version of the Elantra.

VW GTI, Subaru WRX, Civic Si (Type R coming), Focus RS... etc.

Is it lack of engineering know how? Or, (unlike other brands who realize there are enthusiasts looking for something a little different) are they clueless?

Every generation I hold out hope that Hyundai will release an Elantra performance variant and every time... disappointment.

Yet, Kia offers the Forte Koup and Forte 5 with a 201hp/195 ft/lb. of torque turbo engine. WTF?

Am I they only one tired of seeing Elantras doing 0-60 in just under 10 seconds?

Dated dash styling, toned down exterior, average to weak powertrains... THE 2017 ELANTRA!

That's exactly what they're doing. They are pushing the Forte after the Mazda and Civic "enthusiast" crowd, and the Elantra is the bread and butter car that the masses will enjoy.

LOVE the interior.

No doubt Bob. But it's the reason EC isn't as active as it once was. The XD was a fun, relatively cheap car, that was something you could mod.

Then came the HD and the styling disappointed. Then the MD... nice style but no one was modding them. Now, the AD is a mini-Sonata.

It's tough to run an Elantra enthusiast site... cool.gif

Actually that's a 2015, Chris. Here's the 2016 that will have a nice little 174 hp, 162 ft/lbs. torque 1.5 turbo...

Eesh...128hp?? The Elantra already felt underpowered with 138 HP. So they have a 128 HP version, but now add turbo lag to that.

I like the styling, but the performance is seriously lacking even for a grocery getter.

Not gonna lie, I bought the Elantra to keep the S2000 an interesting car by contrast after 6 years of ownership.

The Elantra excels where the S2000 is dismal, and vice versa (except torque...neither car has torque). I wanted a roomy, quiet, comfortable car that still had a clutch and was affordable to buy, maintain, and insure. Roomy, and quiet are 2 polar opposites of the S2000, and comfortable went out the window after setting it up with coilovers for autocross. So taking a break from one to drive the other is always nice. While the S2000 (at the time) had a somewhat reasonable price as a used car and is cheap to maintain (apart from tires), the insurance is a nightmare.

I wanted a car to calmly soak up all the commuting miles, and a warranty to support that. Sometimes that's all people look for in a car, even if said people are enthusiasts.

I don't mind the new Elantra so much.
Rear view looks better.
The dash is not so busy, with too many reflective chrome distractions, like the previous generation 2013~'16.
Never did like the current Elantra sedan and GT, sorry.
Rear quarter panel, and interior are some areas I didn't like.
