If any of our EC regulars want to stay in touch or just "shoot the shit" or vent, post up in this thread.

Hello all! Hope everyone is doing aright these days, especially our members in the greater Houston area and Florida.

Speaking of Houston, a co-worker has a good friend there that lost his car which was a VW Golf TDI that he was preparing to turn in soon. Well as it turns out he went ahead and bought the latest Elantra GT (insurance covered the loss). He loves everything about it! Says it's better than his Golf ever was, in comfort, handling, quality you name it! I sure wish I could buy one myself ;-)

Posted by: elantragt Sep 11 2017, 05:08 PM

Hey Dave!

The new GT is like owning a well designed European hatch at a Hyundai bargain price.

Posted by: popeye Sep 12 2017, 09:16 AM

I would buy one in a heartbeat! Right now though I have to consider what my wife will need, and this may not be the choice for her. And she isn't interested in my CX5 since it's a stick :-/

Posted by: elantragt Sep 12 2017, 01:13 PM

Get her the GT Sport hatch with the DCT. biggrin.gif

Hi guys!
Sorry for switching the subject. I tried contacting Mitch on the new forum but it looks like everything is down sad.gif
As usual we remember old friends when we need help...
I need some insight on what's going with my car... I hope you would be willing to help!
I have 05 XD GLS with around 220K on the clock, manual, I installed a new clutch some 120K ago.
Recently if I change gears [accelerate] at around 2000 rpms [low] then the car jerks like it wants to stall but eventually after 20-30 seconds of jerking it will accelerate. That doesn't happen all the time, I could have good and bad days...
If I change gears at 2500-3000 rpms [high] the car runs like new all the time, never saw the issue.
Any idea what that could be.
In case some one would be interested in replying my email: alexbalaev@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance, Alex

Been 12 years now here at EClub and the club and the GT are still "on the road" :-)

Posted by: elantragt Sep 21 2017, 12:28 PM

Well Dave, we're "here" but not active. Hey, I built the new place in hopes of reviving EC. But, it wasn't meant to be.

Still not impressed with the other Hyundai / Elantra forums out there.

Posted by: popeye Sep 24 2017, 05:09 PM

Well the way the 2 idiots are going off on each other the Korean Peninsula and the US west coast may be active. Radioactive... :-/

Posted by: popeye Oct 3 2017, 08:53 AM

Well what a helluva weekend for news sad.gif

Posted by: elantragt Oct 3 2017, 03:49 PM

Yeah. Just awful.

Posted by: popeye Oct 11 2017, 11:19 AM

Well if the high temps from August and September didn't already wreck Napa grapes, the fires are taking out the rest and the stored vintages.

17 dead, 150 missing, 100,000+ acres, 1200+ structures destroyed and no end in sight. Winds are beginning to gust again today and there is little to no containment on the dozen or so fires up north. Godspeed.

Posted by: popeye Oct 12 2017, 10:45 AM

23 dead, 20+ fires, 170,000+ acres, 3500 structures and upwards of 4 to 5 hundred missing. And still no end in sight...

Posted by: elantragt Oct 24 2017, 01:59 PM

Sorry for the late reply Dave. This hasn't been a good year with all the natural disasters. Not a really good year for much of anything.

Posted by: popeye Oct 27 2017, 08:03 AM

No worries, can't cue up the Sinatra song ;-) Here's to the next one perhaps? party-cheers1.gif

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you out there.

I feel like Bruce Dern in Silent Running in posting here anymore. I'm sure that besides all the "guests" that are viewing here, mine is the only name at times. Today our company shuts down for the next week so my name will be absent from the stats.

To Mitch: Thanks for keeping the flame going here, even though I mostly hang out to play the games when I can as I babysit equipment during the day, I appreciate the ability to do so. Hey, I finally bested one of my long standing records! I hope you are well good sir, that your life has been making a steady improvement and wish you well in the coming year.

Cheers all,

-Popeye

Thanks Dave. I'm keeping it up for a while. It's costing me but I've always tried to be a good guy to our members. This is still a good resource.

Happy New Year to all.

Worth a look at tightening up. Have you tried that?

For the past 14 years that I have worked at my job there has been a little white J series Elantra parked in the lot, almost always the same spot (it's there at 5am every morning). A little worse for the wear, has a Padres sticker on the bumper and a Sports 760 one as well. The gent that drives it has worked here since before I was born, same location doing roughly the same work (Telcom). So now, after 58 years he has decided to retire, and the little white J series will no longer be parked there when I get to work. Adios Jim!

I hope things hold tight for you there. I'll shoot you a text tomorrow to see how you're doing.

Once again, it was a good run Mitch, thank you for all of this. We had some highs and we had some lows, but at some point we all had an Elantra ;-)

Long Live ElantraClub!

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd pop in and say hi. It's been a few years to say the least since I've driven an Elantra. I went back to my roots as a Mazda guy, traded the EGT for a Mazda3 Sport Touring, then a Mazda5 when the family started to grow. Wanted another 3 but they were just too small, and we REALLY didn't want an SUV. The best alternative was a Golf Sportwagen, so that's what I'm driving now. Huge tuning community, and tons of aftermarket support. Also a really large global OEM network, so customizing is really easy. It's amazing how far cars have come in 15 years and I'm every bit certain that's the case with Hyundai as well. I have to say, I'm loving the VW. 200 ft-lb of torque and 40 mpg, almost seems too good to be true (they're probably cheating tongue.gif )

This place has grown a lot! Who else besides EGT, BNystron, and Popeye are still around?

Posted by: popeye Jun 27 2018, 09:40 AM

Hey Southpaw! I think I'm the only one hanging around these parts most days along with the "guests" lol I wonder what Bob is up to these days, and Aaron and Ed.

I still have the Elantra GT but drive a Mazda CX-5, though lately I've been desiring a Tacoma for the utility aspect, they ain't cheap though :-/

Posted by: slowgls Jul 2 2018, 09:49 PM

Holy crap its back open. What's up everyone? Got some news for ya, for the first time in many years there is no longer a Hyundai in my drive way. I got a 2012 vw golf gti. Is that really a big surprise though. I love the car. Mitch I hope your doing good.

Posted by: elantraelite Jul 6 2018, 08:16 AM

Just thought I'd check in...

Life has changed heaps

Current cars
2016 Santa Fe with the 2.2 CRDi diesel... Absolutely love it! Heaps of torque to tow our caravan around Australia

Partners car is now a 2017 i30 SR 1.6 with 7spd DCT great drive and lots of fun to drive

Have never owned anything other than a Hyundai still.. don't think I'll ever change. 7 and counting

For the first time we no longer have a manual transmission car

Adopted a child this year.. fun and games but doing very well

New job doing project management.

Hope everyone is well.

Posted by: Blupupher Jul 10 2018, 09:45 AM

Hey SPB, have not seen you in forever. I still remember reading over your electrical tutorials and such.

No changes for me really.
I still have my F150, wife still has her Scion, but I did buy a motorcycle, a Honda 1100 Shadow.

I will be in the market for another vehicle soon. My daughter is 15, turns 16 in December. We don't plan on getting her a car right away, probably not until summer of next year.
We are trying to decide what to do:
1. give my daughter the Scion and buy something new for the wife (a 2016-2017 Kia Sorento is what I would like, wife wants another mini-van)
2. give her my truck and get me something else (no idea what I want, but this probably will not happen)
3. find some decent beater for her.

My mother in law has a '02 Chevy Tracker 4 door that may be available in a few months (mother in law is in early dementia, and we are evaluating her ability to drive, she still does OK, but not sure how much longer), as well as my mom is thinking of getting a newer vehicle, and I would take her Saturn Vue for my daughter with no concerns.

Mine is onward of 13+ years, and almost 150K. I don't foresee it making it to 1M but one never knows!

Right now it needs: Tires, CV boots, oil pan gasket, T-belt and a thorough cleaning inside and out!

Posted by: Blupupher Jan 22 2019, 07:09 PM

So I am back in a Hyundai!

Bought my wife a 2018 Santa Fe Ultimate Limited with all the bells and whistles.
It was a used vehicle, but only 9 months old and 10,000 miles on it. Got it for about $10,000 less than new.
Loving this thing, and the wife does too.

Pic of it at the dealer the day we picked it up:

Great looking ride, Nolan. Enjoy.

Got tires, but all the rest of that still needs to be done :-/

Currently looking at the Sorento for the wife to replace the GT which my oldest will then take over.

2019 Kia Sorento AWD now in the stable. The GT moves on to the son who graduates today!

Is it soon yet??

Mom just bought a 2018 Kia Soul+ to replace her Saturn. She is really liking it, and she bought an Inferno Red one. Really sticks out.
It is 10 months old and has 23,000 miles on it, drive like new. She got it as a CPO so has the full 10/100 warranty with it.

If Hyundai would ever come out with a real truck in the US, I would get that for myself.
I am slowly working all my family into Hyundai/Kia (3 Santa Fe's, 1 Soul, 1 Sonata, 1 Rio).
Step mother in law is looking for a replacement for her 1998 Lincoln Town Car, trying to get her to look at Genesis.
My mother in law was looking at the Kona, but ended up with a Chevy Trax (blech thumbsdown.gif ).

Here's the only pic I have at present ;-)

We just took it up to Yosemite and Mammoth and it did great, hauled the Thule and a full load. The biggest problem I have with this vehicle is keeping it at the posted limit, it really wants to go well over! I was flying up Hwy 99 doing 75 -80 and on the way back down 395/I-15 - no problems biggrin.gif

I washed the GT yesterday, it really needed it. It still needs the other things, but it still fires up and drives. Some jackass tossed a cigarette butt onto the windshield and I see a could more dings and scrapes but I still love the little car, so much easier to wash than the other 2 pigs. I really wanted to get the new Mazda 3 hatch, but 2 car payments were just not in the cards.

Well looks like I done fergot... it is still running though and the young man is almost ready to take over the reins. Still needs some attention though but she runs and drives! I'll try to grab a shot when it isn't all cover in leaves :-/

Posted by: popeye Sep 5 2020, 02:45 PM

After almost a year of making a promise...

It made it up to Mammoth and back without a hitch. The transmission had been acting up and throwing codes so I replaced the speed sensors and that made the codes stay away. I also had a flush and fill.

Hey all,

Sold my Elantra GT (sadly) when I couldn't jack it up anymore due to the body and frame rusting out so bad.

Ran through an old Audi A8 to find out Audi's maintenance costs wasn't what I was looking for, but the power and niceties were awesome.

Ended up with at 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 AWD and I love it other than some oddities with traction control and the transmission in general.

I miss this forum... my red Elantra GT and the early 2000's.

Hey everyone! I was chatting with cobas on Facebook and suddenly had a vivid hankering to drop by. Fortunately my fingers instinctively remembered the old password. It's wonderful to see a few familiar names in this thread!

153k miles and 17y 2m 4d later -- but who's counting? -- my '04 stickshift is still good fun. I haven't had a driving commute since 2006; it only heads out for rehearsals, concerts, errands, and the occasional road trip. It's been all beat up but is mechanically sound. The crumpled bumper convinces people to let me merge left on the Beltway. cool.gif

In a few minutes we're seeing a dealer to hopefully replace my wife's '05 Mazda6 (a WONDERFUL low-key sport sedan) with one of the last new VW Golfs to hit Maryland. I plan to keep putting 4-6k miles every year on my XD2 until it just doesn't make sense anymore. I still love that thing, and it's in massive part thanks to this community. wub.gif

Thanks for stopping by. Sorry for the late reply.

Amazing your old GT is up and running.

Posted by: 2000J25SP Jul 24 2022, 09:15 PM

What's up?

My 2000 is still running. It has almost 230,000 miles. The clearcoat is half gone, the front bumper has some damage due to a metal shed flying out of a truck on the freeway.

It is still fun to beat on o̶c̶c̶a̶s̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ every time I drive it.
A couple years ago I had the camshafts reground to 235 duration at .050 and 10mm lift. And I cut the intake manifold apart and basically copied the design of the old aftermarket Airram manifolds and welded it back together. I'm done modifying it, just occasional maintenance now.

My sister bought a 2017 Elantra a couple years ago. It's incredible how much more refined they are now. Eventually I will buy something newer.

EC is still here. 😁

Posted by: natesi Jul 29 2023, 02:09 AM

Howdy all,

Update on my life and car adventures:

I sold my 2002 XD (which I owned for 11 years) back in 2014, for a 2013 Elantra - that was a HUGE mistake which lead me to buying one car, after another, after another. See the last post, here: http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=36321&view=findpost&p=395533

I only had the 2013 Elantra for 4 or 6 months - I absolutely hated that thing. That particular car was a bit messed up, as well.

Anyway, I got a 2015 Mazda 3 after that, which I owned for about a year and a half (bought in 2014). But the ride was terrible and the infotainment system infuriating - it froze every day on my 5 mile commute to work, and back. The Bose stereo sucked and the car always struggled for traction, especially in the rain, even after upgrading to ultra high performance all season tires.

My last car purchase was a new 2016 BMW 328i xDrive -- I said screw it and just spent the money. My health was so poor I wasn't sure how long I would live, anyway. That was actually a pretty good car. Believe it or not, the BMW was probably the most reliable car I've ever owned in my life - I had virtually no problems with it.

Well, 7 years later, I'm still alive - overall health is still bad in most ways, but better in other ways. I just sold the 3 Series because ultimately I have a cerebellum problem and the car is transmitting too many road imperfections to the chassis of the car. I tried different shocks, but couldn't get it quite soft enough. Ultimately, there's not enough suspension travel to make any sort of shock or coilover work for my purpose. Many BMWs virtually ride on the bumpstops - no joke.

I've been living off savings for 6 years now trying to recover my health - so will take the proceeds from my BMW and get something cheaper, help pay for medical bills, etc. The car market is absolutely nuts right now too - there's a glut of over priced garbage on the market - it's disgusting. My old XD Elantra soaked up the road imperfections really well and was a lot of fun to drive - so thinking about another XD or maybe an HD - since that had an independent rear suspension too.

Anyway, just thought I'd say "hi" -- glad to see elantraclub still up and running, even if only to current members. Hope everyone is doing well!

-Nathan
