I currently have a Borla XS pro muffler on my car. I loved the sound, and I still do... but either it's getting louder (it does seem to drone a bit more) or my tastes have changed (or both).
First question; since Borlas are stainless (as is the packing), why would it be getting louder? If it's NOT getting louder, could a spent resonator be causing my muffler to sound louder? (how would I tell? The resonator has 206K on it!!). I'm thinking of getting a quieter one. What would give me less sound yet not be restrictive like the factory muffler? -------------------- Music Teacher/Geek for life!! |

I may be wrong, but I believe that the resonator is simply a hollow chamber that is acoustically tuned to cancel out certain frequencies, so they can't go bad until they rust through.
For your muffler, yes it is stainless steel but there is also fiberglass batting in there to help absorb the sound. If this were to get damaged or displaced, the sound could get louder. I had a Dynomax Super Turbo for years and I liked the sound. It was hardly noticeable at idle or normal driving speeds, but sounded great when I got on it. It's a lot cheaper than a Borla or Flowmaster, so it's a viable option. -Roy -------------------- |

I added a 26" resonator to the mid section of the car and it is the perfect tone. -------------------- 2003 Elantra GLS 5 speed

I guess I just want the INSIDE of the car to be quiet... and it used to be a couple of months ago. It's been getting louder on the inside, and the muffler getting louder seems to be the cause!

stEel wool packing can rust out after so many years... and if there is indeed fg inside- that can melt
i dont remember the guys name, but he had an evofusion catback then switched to one of the mufflers available at advance/autozone and the fg actually melted so bad it clogged exhaust... now that i think of it it may have been either dynomax or magnaflow. i had a dynomax on the elantra and it sounded great with the evofusion header -------------------- Oh no, I'm so sorry... the correct answer is The Moops.
The packaging clearly stated '100'. I'm short ONE luft balloon. |

I might be jumping the gun a little. I found out the area behind the muffler is rusted as is leaking. I'm going to fix it and see if that helps!

If you are looking into a resonator, take a look at the Magnaflow resonators. Bob recommended it and it is pretty quite for me and flows pretty free.

If it's a small leak, "thermosteel & quicksteel" work pretty good. Never had it come off before on my ranger when I needed to patch a spot. Bit tough to work with though.

This exact reason is why I went back to stock. It just wasn't worth the annoyance of the drone for me.

This exact reason is why I went back to stock. It just wasn't worth the annoyance of the drone for me. I hear you. I just don't want to lose any performance gains, albeit small ones, going to a stock muffler. I do want the inside to be quiet! -------------------- Music Teacher/Geek for life!! |

Okay, this is driving me crazy. My girlfriend and I just got back from a trip to Washington D.C. The drone is the cabin was too much for both of us; it was actually making her nauseous.
Last week while I had the muffler off, I looked inside and saw the interior is mint. I actually polished it because of how good it looked inside and out (who polishes their muffler?). I've never had a drone issue with this muffler before... so either it's getting louder or something else is not doing its job. I'm at the point where I either cut out the resonator and replace it with something like a Cherry Bomb or I find a more stock-like muffler. I've never once heard a complaint about a Borla muffler before... especially one that is only two years old and in mint condition. Note: there are NO leaks anywhere in the system. My tailpipe, as always, exits past the bumper so no sound comes from under the car. Help me decide what to do! -------------------- Music Teacher/Geek for life!! |
