I've been in the process of *restoring* my Elantra this summer. The first task was ripping out the entire interior and cleaning, repainting, repairing, etc. I took the opportunity to fix a few minor bugs that have bothered me over the years; faulty lighting mods, power locks not working, driver's side door lock frozen, etc.
I can truthfully say now that every single aspect of the car is 100% functional; everything works as it should. It's been years since my power locks worked properly! Mechanically, the car only needs the following; new front flex pipe (I have it and is getting put on next Friday), new front driver's brakes (one caliper pin is frozen, causing vibration- replacing both rotors, pads, and the one caliper.. all under warranty!) and I need new rear bushings for the sway bar. The bar is the 24mm Tibby bar, and it has Energy red poly bushings. They're really squeaky though, even after grease. I've read the black ones (non-greasable) are actually better and last longer, so I'll give those a try. There is minor rust under the car; I'm going to soon climb under it with a wire brush and do what I can. I'll spray Rust Reformer on whatever needs it and then undercoat it. The body is showing its age. The clearcoat decided to self-destruct this summer. I still get pissed when I think about how poor of a job Hyundai did with their clearcoat back then. Whatever... I'm going to respray the truck and top of the car myself, and then have it repainted professionally next year. There's some rust to deal with as well.. fricken NYS winters. Here are some pics of the engine bay and trunk... not perfect by any means, but the car is 10 years old with 206K on it. I work it (have towed with it for 8 years). Edit: Interior pics added.

Looking good.
Yes, they had horrible paint on the '04's (and probably others). -------------------- "Those who yell the loudest about how unfair the world treated them are usually the reason for the treatment in the first place". A nurse on a forum I am on |

I started getting rid of the chrome in the past few years... I guess my tastes have just changed. I still have some on the exterior, but only the door handles and some on trunk. Going for that "cleaner" look... and, truth be told... I was tired of asshole teenagers coming up to me in their crappy civics trying to race me. I'm too old for that crap! I want the car to look classier and subtle on the outside, not like a ricer. If I could do it again, I would not have painted the interior. For those of you who don't know, it used to be completely grey. The upkeep is just a pain, and no matter how careful one is... paint still chips! Thanks for the compliments! -------------------- Music Teacher/Geek for life!! |

Very clean and nice mods! Well done! I love how black the door panels are. Painted I assume?

Yeah, it's all paint. Duplicolor Leather/Vinyl. The paint is decent but door panels take a beating. I have other vehicles at my disposal so I'm going to try to not load the inside of the car with crap.
Here is another pic I just took with some of the light mods.

Well, got the front caliper changed and put on new rotors/pads. New rear poly sway bar bushings and flex pipe... and finally fixed the back of the exhaust by my muffler.
Part of the noise inside I'm getting is from a RUSTED OUT corner near the rear right tire. If you live in the salt belt... you know the area. Engine bay, trunk, stereo, lighting, interior, mechanically, and functionally... the car is perfect. The exterior... bleh. 7 years of NYS and 3 years of central PA have left its mark. Next week... body work. I'd LOVE to weld in new metal... but I don't have a welder or the skills on a welder. I'll grind down to bare metal and cut out what is bad... then patch with fiberglass or bondo. I'll treat everything right anti-rust stuff first. I know it won't be perfect, but if done properly I should get a couple of years out of these repairs. I'm going to undercoat everything before winter as well, so I'm hoping I'll be good for awhile. -------------------- Music Teacher/Geek for life!! |
