I have a few scratches on the hood of my car, not very deep but very annoying to look at. Was wondering how those 2 products worked and if they were available at a local level or just something online?

You should be able to buy the Meguiar's Scratch-X at any local automotive supply company, or bigger dept. stores that have a auto care product section.

The Meguiar's is a great product, but it's not a cure all in many cases! And it requires a fair bit of work before it works! You have to be patient and rub and rub and rub! If you buy it, follow the instructions on the back!

Most very minor scratches will be removed, but deeper ones will require more in the way of a high speed rotary to generate enough heat and to remove a micro thin layer of paint to remove the scratch!

Only thing I didn't see mentioned that I use all the time is Blue Coral Dri-Clean rug cleaner. Works wonders for such a little amount of involved.

Here's mine

WASH

Paint/windows:
Soft cloth, preferably microfiber version x2
5 gallon bucket
Car wash of choice (I have used several)
Lots of water at a pressure that will remove dirt without scrubbing

I tend to wash the car 2-3 times because doing it once is not good enough.

For the tires:
Soft, but still firm bristle brush (made for wheels/tires), regular rag for general cleaning.
Wheel/tire cleaner can be used for heavy grime, but usually isn't necessary.

Exterior polishing:

PC orbital polisher with a buttload of different pads if necessary but hand polishing is usually recommended.
Wax of choice; I use a Dupont polish that has carnuba wax with teflon. This stuff lasts a long time plus it resists dirt.
microfiber towels of various sizes
For serious scratches, the polisher can remove those, but sometimes more evasive work is needed, which a pro should be consulted.
Touchup paint if necessary.

I tend to used pretty basic stuff like Blue Coral Wash for this and budget more of my detailing money for the waxing products. Are there really huge advantages to the higher priced car wash products?

Not really. Soap is soap, does the same thing. However you will find wax in some solutions, which can cause problems if not enough product is used or if it dries too quickly. Some people might think the higher priced stuff is easier on the paint, but when I looked at the ingredients, the solutions had very similar ingredients to lower priced solutions.

When in doubt, compare the labels.

Not totally off topic, but if you are going to use dish detergent they can be different in harshness.

Waxing should be what you should be more aware of the ingredients. Each is different and may not do what you want it to do. All waxes have some cleaners, but stuff like Meguires cleaner wax has more abrasives in it.

For my windows, I make up my own concoction. I use a cup of vinegar, a cup of rubbing alcohol and mix the two in a gallon jug and fill that with water. That really cuts the grime. Paper towels are the recommended wipe because they won't streak like hell. The solution is good for your window washing fluid as well. It is able to cut the grime plus keep the window from getting too bad on road debris.

I have to admit there was a time way back when I did use dishwashing soap to clean my cars. It was handy and I got lots of suds... of course I was probably washing away a lot of my wax too!

I have:

Meguiars Leather Care (every oil change)
Next Dimension Leather wipes (every other wash or so)
Rain-X wipes

And I used to have some Armor All matte finish Dash Wipes, but now I can't find them in any store I've looked in recently!

In decent weather I wash, dry, vacuum, quick-detail, and clean windows about weekly.

I wax when the water doesn't bead up as much.

I think my chamois got dropped by the kids because I have lots of swirlies now. I'm hoping that the Meguiars will help out but I think I'll try their Clay Bar kit once the weather starts to improve. I also need to clean the engine compartment.

Do you have any m/f towels gonzo? Not all are created equal either. There is a cd test i guess. Take a cd and rub the m/f towel on it. If you get scratches on the cd them it is no good for the paint finish

Microfiber (or microfibre if you're from Canadia) towels are what you're after. They're a sort of über-wicking ultra-soft synthetic material. They're best found at Costco, but I've used the Sam's Club ones without any problems. The best tip I can give: If one hits the ground while you're using it, don't use it again until you've washed it. These things pick up ANYTHING they touch.

for the cd test of the m/f towels, how should you do this test? just gently wipe across the cd? Give a little muscle behind it as if you were cleaning windows? A back and forth motion? Just trying to get an accurate idea for the test.

Wipe with similar effert to what you would wipe your car, whether it be for drying or buffing. I would think that more oomph would give a truer test of the abrasiveness of the towels.

if you're planning on using a towel, wash mitt, etc., on your car, test it on a CD first and make sure it doesn't scratch the CD. If it will scratch your CD, it will scratch your car.

I use my shop vac (cleaned out) on the blower port and it works very well also!

really helps push the water out of crevices! Just be sure where you aim the nozzle, if aimed at the ground by mistake you will blow dust back on a freshly washed car! Start at the top of the car work your way down!

I did not think the vac had that much blow power as the leaf blower (which I assume the leaf blower had more).

Another thing I've done is raise the car on jackstands and pressure-wash the undercarriage; preferably before washing the car. Make sure you don't remove the undercoating. If you don't have some undercoat, it would be a good idea to get some put on.

Always trying to give another reason to use my air compressor. Not sure if I will try that though. Although I have considered it to help blow away water on the engine if I get bold enough to tackle that.

I haven't tried the blowing the water out thing. I wish i had thought of that a long time ago. Plus i have all 3 to choose from. Compressor, shop vac, and leaf blower. I guess i really have an arsenal at my disposal.

The compressor will work as well! No worries on using it. Just keep common sense in mind and it will be fine! Works great in the engine bay. Just don't put the nozzle right on hoses/wires etc. as the pressure could do some damage, but you can get close enough to remove the standing water.

If you can get access to a wide air port nozzle for the air compressor, that works better. I also suggest having a drier (like the catch-can devise on HP.com) attached so excess water and dirt don't get sprayed on the now clean car.

That was me. I wasn't sure what to look for but I ended up with a 6 gallon 125psi model from Target for $80 or $90. It came with a nail gun and uses oil. I figured that was my best value. I think I will be upgrading to a much larger one when I can justify all the cool things you can do with an air compressor!


How does this drier work or is it attached to the nozzle of the compressor?

I could be wrong here but I believe what CC is talking about is the filter/dryer assembly that mounts just aft of the outlet port on the compressor and then the hose will attach to that.

The dryer will remove any excess condensation and crap that accumulates within the compressor and will not get sprayed all over your car when using the compressed air.

Not sure if you have ever seen a "vapour trail" of water come out of the air nozzle when using an air compressor? That's the crap you want to avoid if possible.

It's also a good idea to drain the tank after use of the compressor to help eliminate condensation and rust inside the tank as well.

Perhaps Collin could provide a link or two to the topic at HP or elsewhere that you could buy the best unit for the money?

I get it. I was trying to understand how that applied to the engine cleaning where you are blowing water anyway. It definately makes more sense to have that for the crevices after the wash.

My cheapo compressor does not have that part. I do empty it after use and get a few drops of water everytime coming out. It's convenient to do since it only takes but a moment to fill that tank up.

The drier I referred to is a unit with a filter that collects the moisture and dirt in the compressor. You would normally want one on anyway to prevent water from being blown into your air tools. The Hp link is http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/forums/topic.php?t=46353.

Well heres mine: You know the soap that the garages use on their floors? well I use that alot espicially for the tires. Zymol Cleaner Wax and black magic for the tires and dash. I wish I could submit a picture but I have a 2002 Elantra Gls. Looks clean and I love the spring and summer time. Time to wax that car!

My '07 got the dealer "Appearance Package" that included paint sealer & interior stain protection. (at a much reduced price & "lifetime warranty").
The kit that came with this is Platinum Protection System, manufactured by ECP Inc. Includes upholstery shampoo, vinyl enhancer, carwash, and paint protection cleaner. Anyone know if this stuff is any good?
Can/ should I use wax on the paint protection? Clay? Exactly what is a paint sealer?

I saw those kits at the dealer also. I have no clue how good they are... I'm sure they aren't that bad!

A sealer basically is a coat that seals the surface to prep it for a topper/wax.

Okay... well this is going a while back, but I've just started my detailing "kit"

Ive been using Auto Valet's catalogue for a while now and am super impressed with their stuff.
If you plan on being in this, uh you know, taking care of your car thing for very long, definitely take a look though their stuff.
Their compounds arent quite up to par with the 3m products yet but the waxes, degreasers, acids and silocone based products are amazing.

I am a deatail tech at the local hyundai dealership.

the owner is cool with employees using the shop, so my detail kit entails essentially anything i decide to order for the wash bay

if anybody has any specific questions in regards to detailing their car feel free to drop me a line, as ive been doing this professionally for 4 years now.
