I setup up a wiki system for the club while everyone was gone. For those that don't know what wiki is... Basically it's a system of articles that's a true team effort. I've set it up in many categories/subcategories that new articles can be posted to. Any member can start a new article in any category or subcategory. Then, any other member can add to it, edit it for accuracy, add linked photos.. whatever. The idea is that you're getting a constantly evolving article that has input from a lot of members and the end result (hopefully ) will rock. Just like I've made the DIY's, the Garage, the Reviews etc. a club focal point, I want this Elantrawiki to be the best there is for Elantra (and Hyundai) info. A true knowledgebase.
Just a thought, but - maybe as time becomes available the DIY's could slowly move into the Wiki. The whole EC looks so streamlined, but the DIY still has the older theme. Not only that, but rather than you having to manually add everyone's DIY, if someone has a good one they can just post it. I doubt there would be much abuse of the system... Not here at EC anyway.
Seriously though, I can barely concentrate on work I'm so giddy that we're back online.
It's possible down the road, definitely a good thought. I think this ElantraWiki thing will evolve into something very big.
I also have been considering redoing the entire DIY Zone and converting it to the forums format but that's a huge project for another time.
With all due respect, Mitch... don't bother. I think we should just move all that stuff over to the Wiki. This will actually be good because I've been meaning to update the fog light DIY I wrote over at DFWHyundais.com; doing it in a Wiki format might actually be better than trying to salvage the old one.
I would suggest each person who has written a DIY to move theirs over to the Wiki. For new members who want to help, they can check the DIYs and for members that haven't posted in a while, the newer members can work on moving their stuff over to the Wiki.
I would suggest that rather than redoing the old DIY page in the new format, just make it a Wiki front page that has a listing of links to all the DIY Wikis.
Actually... it might be just as easy to make a wiki article with links to the all DIY Zone projects.
I still like them having a distinct and separate area versus being tucked into a wiki.
CAll me stoopid. . . but I don't understand. . . can someone explain?
Wiki? I thought I did that in the first post Bob. Ok basically you'll see the categories I set up. You then go in and write an article (post) in the particular category. Other members (and you) are allowed to go in and edit your article to make it better. They can correct punctuation, add content or delete inaccurate things.. not that you'd be inaccurate! You of course can go back and re-edit. Everything in the wiki works this way. It winds up being a collaboration by all members. Makes sense? It's basically going to be an encyclopedia of Elantra and Hyundai information and all the editiors are YOU. By the way. if anyone can think of new categories/subcategories, post them here and I might just add 'em.
I see. . . didn't know such a thing existed. I'm good at fixing illegible posts!
I'd like to see an editable Wiki for the DIYs for the following reason: There are sometimes DIYs with incorrect information. Rather than bothering you or repeatedly making posts to clear up the info, it would be better to just be able to edit them ourselves.
One for instance is that on several forums (and without checking our DIYs) the DIY for programming a remote is wrong. Anton wrote it just after the release of the 04 models, so he said it applied to all 01-04 Elantras. As it turns out, the ETACS was changed for 04 and for 04-06 Elantras it is not possible for the owner to do the programming. It would be nice if we could correct that information.
Paul, let's just say this.. down the road that's possible. For now I want to get people to know we're starting a Wiki knowlegebase and add articles to it.
Amen to that.
Hmmm I'm sure I could peice together a few DIY's and reviews mixed into it from several different ppl on the forum. Take CAI, i could find 5 members that have them, write a DIY for the install and take comments from those 5 members and add them into the post.......watcha think Mitch??
Let me try to explain what this wiki thing is all about. I've setup the categories I'd like articles written to. Members need to add their articles to the appropriate category. And this is key.. these articles can be simple, short whatever. They don't have to be full blown 15 page articles. Remember, one person can get an article started and other members build on it. I just have the feeling no one has written anything because they're worried they dont have a huge detailed article to write about. Also, the idea of moving the DIY Zone into the wiki area, while an interesting idea, isn't the idea behind Elantrawiki. We have the DIY forum here at the club to discuss if DIY's need updated information. If it simply looks like the Wiki or the new "Times" section or other features simply aren't being used, I'll delete them. No need to have elements at the club no one cares about.
this sounds pretty awesome.... instead of having to hunt down a thread.. or have to bother staff... we could just go and update....
snazzy.
Thanks for adding the horn project Ed.
To show you how this works.. I added a photo as well as some additional information and some highlighting after Ed wrote the article. This is how this thing works. Any member can edit anything. Hopefully, every article will get improved and updated. I think this is one of the coolest things we have and a great way to get members feeling like they are contributing to the club.
Here's the article as it looks now:
http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php?autocom=ibwiki&cmd=article&id=21
i definitely am looking forward to contributing more to the site than just posting meaningless threads.
thats pretty awesome mitch !!
you edited it to be 100% better !!!
I went ahead and re-did the setup a little. The subcategories have been eliminated for simplicity sake (the can always be added later when we have more articles).
Dear Mr. Frank Gummett,
Thank you for you fine new intake article in our Wiki. Your efforts are very appreciated.
Each new article can be built on by other members.
Thank you again,
Mitch
----------
On another note, what does everybody think of a forum here specifically for discussions on our wiki? We can discuss new articles or ideas for articles etc. Let me know.
Thanks muchly Mitch
We did just uncover a glitch though... I was editing same time as you adding the picture and I seem to have lost my edits. I went under history but seem unable to view differences
I'm using Firefox.
If I go under "Options"->"Article History" and then select "Compare with current" for the edits I made at 2:38 (same time as you) I get a "Done" in the status bar on an empty page.
No worries this time as they were only quick edits that I can redo but I thought you should know we have a concurrency issue
wiki is for US to work on....
roflmfao.. lol
u know what i meant.
whats the point if just Mitch is gonna create articles... would be nice.. but defeats the purpose of the wikifunctions.
I think I am going to create an ElantraWiki forum. It might be a way to generate some excitement on this project. I honestly think this could be one of the best resources anywehere if we do it right.
Mitch... thanks for your additions to the Intake Modifications wiki page BUT before we come to blows here are my thoughts on underlining.... AAARGH!
Maybe OK in the old days of typewriters (did you know you can type that word with just the top row of letter keys on a standard QWERTY keyboard?) but these days with so many choices of fonts, sizes, bold, italics etc... me no likey. Also underlined on the web implies a hyperlink. That said it is your forum and I'm not about to wage a war on underlining or anything
A question:
Is there anyway to create an hyperlink to within the same document..?
For example in the Intake Modification wiki there are several references to "hydrolock" and an entry describing what hydrolock is... I am looking for a way to link the references to the description... see the word "hydrolock" -> wonder what it means -> click on the word -> move to the description
I know how to do this in HTML where you set up a name <a name=Disclaimer></a> and refer to it by page and #name <a href="index.html#Disclaimer"><b>Please read the obligatory Disclaimer...</b></a>
Any ideas
Thanks
Frank
Still a lot to finish on the Intake wiki. I sure wish members would get on the wiki bandwagon. It's extremely valuable and kind of fun adding/editing articles.
Doesn't anyone want to get some articles started in the Wiki? Members here definitely have a ton of knowledge and it would be cool if they contributed some of it to Wiki articles.
Here we are a year and a half later...
Hopefully people will see how important this Wiki is and will start trying to build it up.
