8 months ago I purchased a new 2014 Desert Bronze Elantra. All was well until a few weeks ago, I noticed the paint on the passenger side doors didn't match. The front passenger door is definitely a shade darker. However, the front passenger door matches the front fender, and the rear passenger door matches the rear fender, so it's not as simple as a single door that's the wrong color. Basically, the front half of the passenger side is one shade, and the rear half of the passenger side is a lighter shade. I don't know how I missed seeing this earlier, but now that I've noticed it, it really bothers me. The front passenger door is ALWAYS darker no matter how bright/dark the light is, or what angle I'm viewing from, so it's not just an optical illusion.
Has anyone had a similar issue with a Desert Bronze Elantra, and if so, is there any way to address this ? I'll speak to my dealer about it, but I'm thinking my only recourse may be to live with it, or pay a body shop to repaint the passenger side and blend the 2 shades. But repainting seems rather drastic for a brand new car. I've attached a photo. Thanks for any advice, comments you can provide. elantra.JPG ( 329.83K ) Number of downloads: 1 |

Is the peel (texture) consistent throughout the door? Park the car out of direct sunlight, look at it up close. Compare that with the peel of the rear door. You should be able to tell fairly easily if the panel has been sprayed on.
To me it looks like it has been sprayed on at some point. I wouldn't worry about having it blended, they could spray the front and rear doors, blend it out and have a good match, but the rear door might not match the rear quarter panel. On light colors, even if you don't spray basecoat just spraying 2-3 coats of clearcoat WILL make it darker. Some times this isn't noticeable, other times it is very noticeable. Most automotive clearcoats will be a bit yellowish actually. On light colors, some painters will stop the first coat of clear about a foot from the edge of the panel, then spray the whole panel on the 2nd coat. This gives a slightly better match, but the clearcoat will fail much sooner, so I don't do it. -------------------- 2000 Elantra

The texture of both doors seems similar to me but there are some odd marks near the front passenger door handle that suggest a repair. Is it possible that clear coat darkens with sun exposure ? I can't figure out why I didn't notice this colour mismatch for the first 6 months I owned the car. I'm pretty fussy about things, and I think I would have noticed. If the front door was repainted, and a different clear coat applied, perhaps it is darkening as the car sits in the sun every day (the car is parked outside 24/7). I think I will take it to a body shop and get their input before talking to my dealer -- I'm worried my dealer will tell me it's just my imagination, or within normal painting tolerances. Many thanks ! |
