I bought a new Touring last month and I am very happy with it so far. I just noticed today though that when I go over speed bumps(slow of course) there is a metallic clunk coming from the rear of the car. This just started, I have never noticed it before. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could possibly be? Any and all help would be appreciated thanks.

Good to have a warranty that covers everything still.

First guess would be rear sway bar links; maybe something has come loose.

Next time you go over a speed bump and you hear the sound, repeat the procedure with your foot lightly on the brake. If the sound goes away, the problem is likely a brake pad bouncing around. That happened to me with an improperly installed brake pad on a VW. It's usually an easy fix - dealer can fix in a few minutes.

Not too likely to occur on a new car, but easy to check out and/or eliminate.

Ok, I guess I'll be the one to ask the stupid question. laugh.gif

If it just happened today, what do you have in your trunk? Sometimes the obvious is the last place we look. I would first check the contents of the trunk to see if that could be causing the sound. Next up. . . brakes and suspension. wink.gif

Not a stupid question, I did check the back of the wagon and I did have some stuff in the compartment under the cargo tray. I removed them and thought that I had solved the problem until I went over another speed bump.

Ahh damn. Its never that easy is it! Well don't be afraid to use the warranty if it continues. Thats one of the great things with Hyundai is the warranty.

metalic clunk... Is the dougnut loose or the jack flopping around?

Or does it sound like it is outside the car? kinda hard to tell from the drivers seat but if you have a friend a few minutes find a speed bump and have them drive over it with you standing outside. Or even in the back of the car.

I will check if the jack or the Doughnut(I assume you mean the spare?) is loose. Thanks...

you can also just bounce the rear of the car without it even moving to see if you can replicate the noise with the up/down motion, or even a side-to-side.
also worth a try, that will check the suspension.

a co-worker ended up buying his Gen Coupe because of a noise in his previous cars trunk... that turned out to be cases of empties he forgot he put in there.... sad I know.

I had a similar issue with my ET, the jack was loose in the styrofoam housing and was clanking when I hit just the right frequency of bumps. I pulled all that junk out and drove for 2 days to work out what was causing it. Easy enough to just wedge it in slightly differently and the clank was gone.

If only the one on the driver's side knee/crash panel was that easy to fix smile.gif

The rear of my HD makes a lot of noise, but I haven't tried to reproduce it since it never got worse...I'll try to whole car sitting still and shaking the rear.
