My '04 GT has 227,000 miles on it and although it's running fine, I don't expect it to last much longer without requiring a major investment in parts and my time (it's almost all original). I'm looking at a low mileage (under 35K) 2012 Elantra Touring with a manual transmission, sunroof and leather (an SE).

Are there any known maintenance or performance issues with these cars?

I assume that the drivetrain is very similar to my '04, but are there any significant differences?

I noticed that the shifter has a collar for reverse now, which means that the short shifter in my '04 probably won't work. Is that correct and if so, is anyone making a short shifter for this car?

Thanks

Brian

I don't know much about the tourings, but mechanically they shouldnt be any different from the sedans. they do look bigger though - be sure to take a lengthy test drive.

the collar means it is most likely a six speed...... i highly doubt your short shifter will be a fit. im also not sure there are any shorties available. but you may find you like it. the throw on my velosters was very short, stock.

You can buy the short shifter from the dealer directly(i believe OBX is making them)
I have it and it makes a nice feeling when you shift, feel more mechanical than mushy
The collar is for the reverse like on VW. The transmission is just a 5 speed

The gearing for the 5 speed manual is perfect for city driving but no ideal for highway
You will rev at around 3200 at 70mph
Then again because of the low power of the car I would not recommend it with automatic as this will make the car quite slow

From mypoint of view the car is very badly insulated.
If you are lucky previous owner would have changed the OEM tires that are crazy noisy
I would say the engine sounds harsh and noisy also,

Maintenance:
I got 37k miles and nothing went wrong on engine or transmission
Window windhsield washer motor broke within first year
Headlight got replaced because of fog
Steering got replace because leather was flaking away (common issue it seems)

Fuel consumption
I average 27 MPG with a heavy foot

Aside from that I have to say it is very reliable and fun to drive.
My daily commute changed to more highway travel and this is where most of my complaints come from

I believe the touring sits a little higher over the sedan.

Well, I bought a 2012 Touring SE with 25K miles on it. It's Titanium gray and has new rubber, the Bluetooth kit, (factory) short shifter, floor mats and mudguards for $13K. On a 150 mile drive today, I averaged nearly 38 mpg, which as good or better than I've ever gotten with my '04 GT. However, this was one way, so we'll see how it does once I use it on some of my regular drives.

There are a couple of things I need to modify:
  • The Bluetooth shuts off unless the key is in the "on" position. It's a pain, so I'll have to rewire it so it works in the "accessory" position.
  • Like my GT, the sunroof does not have the 30-second key-out feature. I'll have to check out the wiring diagram to see if I can rewire it the way I did with the GT (there's a DIY for it).

Other than that, I'm please with it so far.
