ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Elantra General Discussions _ LOUD Knocking Noise from Engine
Posted by: spextar Jun 17 2016, 12:05 AM
Hey guys!!! It's been a while. Can't believe it's been nearly 12 years. So, I need some input from you. Just today, my car started making this really loud knocking / clunking / ticking noise out of nowhere. I was driving for about 30 mins, and may be about 5 mins from my home I heard this noise, and I thought it was some other car. But the noise remained and I knew it was my car. Came home and opened the hood, and it seems the noise is coming from the left side of the engine.
Here's a video, and the sound is exactly like in the video.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

That my friend is a lifter tick. Take the valve cover off and see if anything is broke

That's what the old Fram filters sounded like after 1500 miles or so.

Damn... If I take the valve cover off, do I have to put a new gasket? There is absolutely no leak of any kind right now. I want to take the top timing belt cover to see if it's something there. I can take that off without taking the valve cover, right?

I have the OEM filter installed, in fact, I have always used OEM filter. Do you think OEM filter could go wrong?

Taking apart and cleaning the HLA's solved the ticking noise on mine. There's a write up in the DIY section. Or you can just buy a need set.

Thanks. Is this the write up? http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=34650
Before you cleaned them, was the ticking noise as severe as the video? It sounds more like something is hitting something else inside.
Btw, with the timing belt top cover off, is it ok to start the engine to see if the noise is coming from that area?
Thanks.

T-BELT Cover is just a dust cover. IT serves no other purpose than to keep sticks and road debris from getting in there and throwing hte belt off.

Thanks. Here are some additional info, not sure if it's related. 1. For a while I had belt screeching noise at start-up, but it always went away after 2-3 seconds. 2. About 6 months ago, I checked the oil and it was at the L mark, not sure how it got so low, the oil light never came on. I immediately put oil, and later did an oil change and after that there wasn't any issues. 3. Yesterday when it happened, I had the AC on and it was about 90 deg outside.
Let me know if any of these are relevant.

Yeah that's the one. My phone speaker doesn't work, so I just now listened to it with head phones. That sounds a LOT louder than mine was.
On Ebay you can get a new set of lifters $65. They're probably Chinese made so you never know about quality.

The screeching noises are belts slipping. You're probably due to change your accessory belts.

Thanks. Your DIY write-up helped a LOT. I haven't taken the valve cover yet. I did take the Timing Belt top cover and started the engine. Same loud knocking sound but it's not coming from the timing belt area. I will take the cover off tonight and see what's happening underneath.

I had the belt changed when I had the dealer change the TB. To be honest, the belt screeching started since then. I took it back and they adjusted something and it was good for a while, but the noise came back. Let me see what's going on with the noise, if it's reasonably fixable, I might change the belt.

In that case, one or more of the belts needs to be tightened. The A/C belt is the hardest to do, just because you more or less have to do it from the bottom, but the other 2 aren't that bad to deal with.

I took the valve cover off and I thoroughly checked for something broken, and it doesn't seems like there's anything that's broken. Tomorrow I will take a ton of pics and have you guys take a look to see if you find anything unusual. Thanks.

Unless you actually took the rockers and lifters off, you won't be able to see much of anything.
