Many people ask about the ECU reset. What does it do? Is it really worth doing? Are there any negative effects? I think it's time to have a definitive guide to the ECU reset.
Why do we reset the ECU's?
The main reason we reset the ECU's in our cars is for more power. Plain and simple. Why? After a little while of driving, the ECU de-tunes the engine to satisfy the O2 needs of the cat. When you reset the ECU, it resets the fuel maps to a base value that's more suited to power.
Is this bad in any way?
Yes, it can be harmful. When you reset the ECU it changes the fuel maps, which is potentially harmful to the cats.
How often should I do it?
Only when you need the extra power. If you are going to race, dyno, or show off, these are the only times you should do the reset from a power standpoint.
How do I reset the ECU.
There's multiple theories about this. The time consuming way is to disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes, press the brake pedal, then reconnect the negative terminal. This method is fine if you want to wait around 15 minutes, and reset the clock, and the radio presets and settings. A simpler way is to pull the two fuses labeled "ECU" in the underhood fuse block. And the easiest way (after initial difficulty) is to hook up a switch;
ECU reset switch DIY Any more questions? Feel free to ask.

Alright, i purchased a K&N filter for my 2005 elantra; a week later my check engine light turns on. My Car begin to drop rpms, while idling, and then shoot up to 2,000, continually. So I took it to the dealer, and I had to get a new MAF sensorbecause the oil from the filter got onto the tiny needle in the sensor. So, just a warning for future buyers of this type of filter. It doesn't happen to all the cars, but to some.

QUOTE
Well, I've done my first round of temp testing, and I'm amazed. Amazed and Appaled.
Test appartus. Fluke 54-2 Datalogging Thermometer. Test Probe #1. Stock airbox. Probe next to stock air temp sensor. Test Probe #2. Stock Intake manifold. Probe Inside runner #2. 1" Upstream from port. Probe .75" up from port floor. Probe surrounded by .5" of silocone to insulate probe from metal heat.
It was 60-61F the night of the test. Both probe's read this prior to starting. Probe #1 stayed at 60-61F at the start. Installing the intake manifold to a warm block warmed T2 up 10°F in the time it took us to install it and tighten up all bolts. Not good!
I don't have the "starting" datalogs, but I'll do another set. This datalog set is after driving for 5 miles, letting the engine sit for 8 minutes (off) then driving 5 miles home. (so these readings start "warm"
"max" airbox temp 104.3°F
"max" intake port temp 153.3°F
"max" temp difference 56.9°F
I'll post up the "text" of the datalogs tonight.
This is with at 100% BONE STOCK setup.
Stock airbox
stock resonator
stock TB WITH COOLANT HOSES
stock IM
What I learned....
#1. The intake ports get HOT QUICK, and it doesn't really cool down when you floor the engine
#2. The stock airbox heats up rather slowly, but once hot, doesn't cool down either.
#3. The "temp" at the airbox was easy to affect by doing high RPM (high air flow) driving, however cooler airbox temps didn't equal cooler port temps. SO the incoming air CAN quickly cool down the airbox and the stock IAT reading, but that reading doesn't translate to cooler air at the ports.
I don't know if this is the coolant hoses heating up the air, the stock IM transfering heat from the head, both, or neither. (could be radiant heat from the head/valve affecting the temp probe. I doubt it, but it's possible).
I'll have more photos and data graphs along with (hopefully) a new datalog that goes from 100% cold to 100% hot.
T1 T2 T2-T1
90.4°F 129.9°F 39.5°F
87.9°F 136.6°F 48.7°F
88.5°F 140.5°F 52.0°F
89.5°F 143.7°F 54.2°F
90.5°F 146.2°F 55.7°F
91.7°F 148.3°F 56.6°F
93°F 149.8°F 56.8°F
94.2°F 151.1°F 56.9°F
95.5°F 152.3°F 56.8°F
96.7°F 153.3°F 56.6°F
98.5°F 139.9°F 41.4°F

91.3°F 114.4°F 23.1°F
92.6°F 124.4°F 31.8°F
I'll be eventually removing the resonator and doing this again, also the stock airbox in favor of a CAI. I'll also be removing the coolant hoses and installing a Phenelic Spacer(I'll show folks how to make one) between the IM and the head, each step will be documented, and datalogged. This is just my "preleminary" data, and it was simply too shocking NOT to share.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, the stock airbox isn't really helping either. After just 20 minutes of running, the air in the airbox went from 54.5 to 82.7 F
I then let the car sit for 60 mintues (had to go into work) After "cooling" for an hour, the air box was 99.6F!!!!!!! (port temps were also sky high at 120.6F. This is on a 54 degree day with light rain!!!!!!
Can you imagine how bad it is going to be on a "hot" 100+ degree day?

Keep in mind, this is a 54 degree day. The air box/resonator gets darn hot and transfers a lot of that heat to the incoming air. I'm hoping a CAI keeps the intake air much cooler coming in, but We'll have to see if it works out that way.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, I should have explained. The "dips" in the port temps are due to WOT operation. If you notice, the airbox temps are fairly static, a slow steady rise. The port temp is very eratic, due to the close throttle/open throttle change of state.
And that is the last I ever heard. RDTiburon seems to be down right now. He may have posted more results over there.

A few weeks ago I noticed excessive oil consumption, about half of a quart every one hundred miles. As well as occasional black smoke coming from the exhaust. There's no visible oil leaks. So I assumed the one hundred and ninety thousand mile piston rings were starting to show their age. The compression test showed that all cylinders were between 210-215 psi. So one would assume that the rings are actually in decent condition. Now I believe the valve stem seals are worn. I figured if I were to install new valve stem seals, I would rather install them on the better flowing solid lifter Beta 2 non-cvvt cylinder head. So I acquired a 2002 Elantra head for fifty dollars.
And then I figured If I were to take the time to install another head, I may as well take a bit more time and install a decked Beta 2 head with head work.
I'm about six hours into this project and probably have another ten to go. I'll need to get an extension for the Dremel.
It will probably be a few weeks until I will be able to finish and install the head.
Here are the before and the halfway finished exhaust ports:

I bought this L3 racing intake off of Ebay, $40 and free shipping. The quality isn't exactly the best, but it does look better than the factory air box, and gives a nice little growl at wot.
It also came with blue hoses that go to the iacv and valve cover, they were the wrong size (and tacky as hell) so I got some 3/8 and 3/4 heater hose. The couplers are pretty terrible, so I might change them out sometime. I also swapped out the filter with a Spectre that I had laying around.
And the mount needs to be carefully bent a little bit to reach the tranny mount.
$200 Injen intake vs $40 Ebay intake.

Anyways, I have had a cone filoter on my '04 for some time now, and I was reading a few posts that talk about oiling up the filter before putting it on. Is this something that MUST BE DONE, or am I ok for not doing it. I just bought a $25 APC filter from Pep Boys that didn't include any oil? Should I look into getting anew filter and oiling it, or just oiling this one?

It seems like I am making a new thread every day now. I've been working on getting my car back up to snuff, and I've realized that many performance parts for this car are no longer being manufactured so I am trying to buy things that I will need or want in the future in order to accomplish my goals with this car.
A few years ago, I purchased an intake that was meant for a 94-97 Honda Accord. For some reason, the intake just wouldn't fit my car. I am guessing it is because I have an XD2. Needless to say, it was never installed. I am thinking about buying this intake since it is designed specifically for my car. I do know that some ebay products are hit or miss, but this one looks good to me. Has anyone had any experience with this one?

I have been noticing a dip in power as I go up in RPMs. I drop a bit of power between 3400 and 4000 rpm. Feels like the car pulls back for a second, and then decides to really go again. Only fault code is P0441, but I have had that code for 3 years, and this problem only came up within this last year. Any ideas?

I was going to Dyno my 03 Elantra GLS sometime in the next month or so and I was collecting some Stock data from our cars. For the Hell of it, I wanted to compare the stock factory data with that of the 03 Tiburon. I found out that the Elantra actually comes in the lead in a few places. Can anyone verify these tables?

I lifted this data from the corresponding car's Wikipedia page.

Hey guys,
I just installed a cold air intake, and wanted to let you know my thoughts and opinions. I will keep it updated with my latest reviews as I own it longer and longer.
I purchased a 2 piece 94-97 Accord CAI off of E-Bay for $38 (this includes shipping costs).
I do not recommend installation for a total amateur, but anyone above that level should be able to pull this off. Removed the old air intake system. I didn't jack the car up, I just turned the steering wheel all the way to the left, and I was able to reach in all that I needed to, although I'm sure it would have made installation a little easier. I left the battery in the whole time, just moved it around a bit. I only had to make some minor/easy modifications to get the new tubes to fit into the original air intake hole in the fender. No biggie. I unplugged the ECU fuse when I began so when I plugged it back in it could relearn the new system (I didn't feel like disconnecting the battery and having to reset my clock because sometimes it acts screwy, and I didn't want to lose my radio stations).
I took it out for a drive, and thought I was missing something because I was as quiet as the stock....this is until I got onto a main drag and gave it some gas. It sounded great. Not overbearing at all. I was fearful that it would be too loud for my liking (like one of those fart-can Civics). I didn't want something that would turn heads when I drove by. Just a nice little purr, and that's what I got. Once I hit about 2500 rpms there is a purr, and you get a real growl when pulling onto a highway. Cruising speeds on the highway were as quiet as stock.
I drove it for about 30 miles after it was installed. Half highway and half city.
I can definitely feel a nice gain in power. I will keep you updated on the gas mileage.
I'll keep you guys posted. Any questions please feel free to ask.

I've herd a lot about the 1.8 intake can giving a bump in power on the 2.0. I've read instructions on how the Install should be but it doesn't go in depth and I don't want to risk breaking anything or doing something wrong without a little extra guidance. Just really more details about the removal of the stock cam and what all to remove loosen etc.

First post besides my new member post. But anyways, I was wondering whats my best bet for a cold air intake on my 09 elantra? Something that gives off a good sound and I know I won't get huge power gains also but whatever it can do would be fine. Also I am thinking about putting a k&n drop-in filter in. So if anyone can help me out or throw in their opinions/knowledge/experience that would be great! Thanks(:

I currently have a Borla XS pro muffler on my car. I loved the sound, and I still do... but either it's getting louder (it does seem to drone a bit more) or my tastes have changed (or both).
First question; since Borlas are stainless (as is the packing), why would it be getting louder? If it's NOT getting louder, could a spent resonator be causing my muffler to sound louder? (how would I tell? The resonator has 206K on it!!).
I'm thinking of getting a quieter one. What would give me less sound yet not be restrictive like the factory muffler?

Recently installed an intake spacer, before I did the work I did some research on how to install it and, the way everything was explained, seemed fairly easy. What really became a problem for me during the installation was the bolts on the brackets being stuck. I was able to break 3 out of the five bolts loose from the bracket (one bolt under the manifold and 2 bolts behind the block) leaving only 2 left. I broke one loose using an impact (air) ratchet, the other one I couldnt get to fit into becuase of the limited space. I eventually got it loose, I ended up removing the bracket to get through and remove the bolts under the manifold. I needed to remove a few other things too that were near the area becuase it ended up being in my way. After finally removing all the bolts I had to remove a 2 line from the manifold to the valve cover, the switch for the TPS, and the part that bolts upt to the sidewall with the reservoir. I had to use a thick screw driver to push out the manifold. It was somewhat difficult to push out due to the limited room I had that I had to have another person help me out. We were able to push and hold the manifold just enough out that I could slide the gasket and spacer in and get through the stems. with this in, we put the manifold back in bolted everything back up. I bolted only a few with the washers because I didnt get enough thread to screw in (not sure if this is fine or not). I reseted the ECU and havent really punched it yet to "feel" the gains but I'm sure it will help with my bolt-ons. Wanted to share my exp. and also help others aswell with this. I can see how it'll be a 30 minute job, but all the hassle I had, I don't want to do it again. I don't have pictures of the process but I could still give a small DIY of it.

Haven't been on here in a while. I caved in on the custom exhaust and went ahead and got the OBX exhaust. Yes, I did get the headers as well. However since the exhaust is meant for the Tiburon chassis it was too short to reach the elbow pipe from under the car. This problem scratched my brain a lot but k managed to get around it, I used piece of sheet metal to connect the pipes together and bounded it by house clamps. Now it holds and good but my other issue occurred. It has no hanger for the resonator pipe and it would just hang down like a sloth. I ended up using a sturdy but thin piece of metal and drilled it under the body so it will hold. Although solved I messed some thing up with the house clamp. I torqued it too much and it ended up breaking, exhaust still went to the muffler (little leak though) but the axleback wouldn't stop bouncing around my rear sway bar. I bought more house clamps and had placed them on the sheet to hold the exhaust and connect it. Now I have no problems with it but I may still use some other alternative to have the exhaust connected and held.
Sharing my experience and how I fixed it I will put some links to the pics and a video of just installed and after break in period.

Hey guys i read up om some topics but didnt get much information regarding camshafts that can be put into this motor. I have an option of regrinding the current camshafts, but was also told that the 1.6 cams can give me better performance than the current ones. This didnt really make sense to me though, but my friend has the 1.8 j2 with a 1.6 gearbox and he says he has 1.6 camshafts, and the car seems really quick. Also is there any throttle body modifications i can do? I want to see what options i have available before i send the car in for tuning, as i found someone who can tune my standard ecu with some device. It makes a big difference as he tuned my friends car and we saw quite an improvement. Thanks in advance

Hi all, just wondering what would be some recommended mods to get on my 2014 elantra 4 door sedan GL model.
I was thinking about perhaps upgrading the stock air filter to a K&N one. I also read up on here that getting a cold air intake can also help with getting a few extra horse power.
Im just hopefully looking to slowly increase the performance and horsepower of my elantra over the new 2-3 years, I know they're not the best cars to even mod but any recommendations or links would be much appreciated.
Also, would you recommend getting mods installed at the dealership or at a shop?

Any one with a 07 try the cold air intake yet? I have one but are not sure if it is safe to install.Inside the intake box there is a radiator for some thing i believe is the ecu.the question beggs if I remove the box to install the cold air unit will the ecu over heat?Is the 07 the only model to have this issue?

I read that when rebuilding the 2.0l cvvt engine that you could use 1.8L pistons on the 2.0L rods to increase compression. The article said it would bump it to 11:1. Has anyone done this mod on a rebuild? The reason I'm asking is, we have a 04 elantra 2.0L that we are racing circle track, that will be getting a little tired after this season in Nov. and I plan to rebuild it over the winter. This is one of the mods I plan to do and since it has to remain "stock", no after market parts, I can do this with factory oem parts even if it's from a different size engine as long as it is "oem" parts. If there are any other mods that I can do and keep it basically stock, I would appreciate any input.. Oh, and the ECU is covered I think but input about that would be great also. One last thing, is there any longer stock springs I can get for it that would fit so I can preload, compress, them and replace my stock strut springs.
Thanks
