So, busy weekend/week for the SooperKia. Saturday was our dragcross. Sunday normal event. Tuesday was a 20 minute free track session at Putnam Park. So tired..... so stoked. Car was a beast all weekend. Saturday drove home in a driving downpour, yesterday was jus shy of 90* (89) and we road home in cold AC. Amazing...
Now on to the track vids...
https://www.facebook.com/bob.miller.1804109...08497495167932/https://www.facebook.com/bob.miller.1804109...08497288642769/I passed more cars than passed me so that is a good thing considering this is my first time on a real race track. Hit the endof hte Putnam straight right at 100mph on hte last few laps once I figured out how to hit that last corner exit to the front straight. Awesome time.

I traded in my BabyHyundai on Tuesday 4/12 and purchased another dead sexy car. Thanks to Mitch for all the info and specs, I believe this is the better deal then the Elantra Limited. My Kia is everything I wanted and was brought up from Mass to me here in Maine!! So far, I am so happy!!

Both of these cars should release before mid year. There are some nice mechanical changes including an optional 7 speed DCT for the sporty Forte5 SX. There's also a very "Veloster-esque" orange interior package. A 7" inch infotainment screen is standard and there is an optional safety package where the car pretty much drives itself!
The sedan is not too bad...
On the other hand, this Forte5 SX is rockin!
I really like the new sedan and hatch wheels!

Well, Porky, my trusty steed for the last 10 years, 4 months and 25 days finally got replaced. After being the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, I ditched her BEFORE she left me stranded. Rust was starting to grow rather rapidly, some places a little more critical than others (like the radiator mounts), and she needed a lot of little work that a car it's age and miles (155k) needs.
So we found a really good replacement. 2010 Kia Forte SX Sedan 6MT. Found it in Troy, OH listed for $13,900 with 18k miles on the odo. Ended up with $10k loan for a 2 year old car that's almost new.
On to the pics:

Not many details have come in yet but we do have some pictures of the upcoming sedan in Korean trim.
Mini Optima?
Love that flat bottom steering wheel!
Updated alloy wheels
My guess is they will use the same drivetrains as the Elantra with the new detuned 1.6 turbo in top of the line Koup and Forte5 models.

I've needed a wheel alignment for quite some time but I just haven't been into doing anything for the car (or doing anything really) since Tammy passed away.
I finally made an appointment at a local Kia dealer for that to be done. This was a different dealer than the last one I went to. The other dealer does some "shady" stuff in their service department. You know the type of shop I mean... You go in for say, an oil change, and after about a half hour the service adviser walks over to you with a list of extra things you should have done. Like a $300 transmission fluid change, for example. Or, you need new brake pads. "Yeah, sure I will do that... but uh, sir... I only have 10,000 miles on the car"! Yeah, one of those kind of places.
So with trepidation, I walked into the dealership this morning for my oil change, rotation and alignment. I also had a minor recall to do on a brake light relay switch. I was pleasantly suprised when they told me my car was in great shape and the battery, fluid levels, tires, brakes etc. looked great.
I will be going back to that dealer. I see why they get 4.8 stars out of 5 on Google reviews.

So, many of you noticed I'm not on much. The new job keeps me pretty busy. So what I do now is analyze oil data from analysis testing and make recommendations for maintenance. The job is good, the company is great and my new boss and workmates are awesome. But better yet, I get to run my own vehicles through the program and run my own analysis. Think Blackstone Labs, only better, bigger and more information.
So, last weekend as the Forte is approaching 60k (58500) it was time for an oil change and it's second trans fluid change.Since I have the test kits, I figured I'd run them both through.
The engine oil I use is the full synthetic Walmart Supertech 5W20 with an OEM filter. At 5k miles, the oil was fantastic. The worst result had 11ppm of iron, which is WELL below the threshold to start flagging to watch. Basically, the oil could have gone another 2500 miles and been checked again.
The trans was a bit more surprising though. I had changed it at 30k with the OEM Hyundai 75w85 fluid. The results of that were a little less comforting. While it wasn't bad, the particle count was about normal for the mileage, it showed that there is a reason why they suggested 30k intervals for the fluid. Granted, this is the fluid I ran all last summer for autocross and cross country trips etc, so my experience is likely not the same for many. But after seeing this, I would highly recommend changing your manual fluid often for long term reliability.
As soon as I get a chance, I'll get copies posted up for all to look at.

So the last few days have been... trying. Weds had a flat tire on my car on the way home.Great. First one since I was 16. If you're doing the math at home, that's over 20 years without a flat on a vehicle I'm driving/while I'm driving. Fine. Get it fixed. Saturday morning, tpms light is back on. crap. Check the previous tire, no problem there. Check the other rear, flat. The stiff sidewall holds them up strangely enough.
Fine. I go into work for my 6th day. Get home late and hte wife is "cleaning" the Forte. Fine... she finishes up and comes in. Monday I take the tire off and bring it in. Finally get someone at work to do a plug patch Tuesday. Get home, put it on. This morning head out, open the door and no light. Huh... well, maybe she just turned them off when cleaning. Insert key and .... nothing. Fuck. Battery is d-e-d dead. Yank the battery, bring it in. No point in testing. It's 1 month from being 5 years old (build date December 2009), and it's been below freezing for 3 days straight. This thing is done.
Two weeks ago, the wife destroyed another tire on hers with 15k on them. Looked at the fronts and realized I hadn't actually done the alignment because the front tires are toast..... and she destroyed one of the new looking rears. Great. So I had to order 2 more for hers. 2 flats for the Forte in 3 days. A dead battery and the tires on the truck have aged out to the point that they are harder than granite right now. Geesh..... what a week.

.. how easy this thing is to work on. Sunday I ran out last event. Car took close to 30 runs with at least 15 different drivers. Drove it home, and an hour and 20 minutes later the entire suspension, wheels, tires and battery are back to stock.
That's something the old C4 Corvette could never do!

Ok I just finished wrapping my grille about an hour ago. I actually bought the gloss black 1080 vinyl on Ebay (through the EC affiliate link) a while back.
Remember the chop I did? It's amazing how close my chop was to reality. The 3M stuff was fairly easy to work with overall. I applied heat and went one section at a time. There are some small bubbles and imperfections, but hopefully, these will come out in time. And if I get tired of the look, I can peel it off and go back to stock. And yeah I pulled off the yellow fog covers AGAIN. I guess I just don't really like 'em.

Well, this is a rarity... me posting about a mod. Lack of money and my wife's health issues have put an end to mod "career".
But this one was out of necessity. The clearcoat on my Forte's door handles has been peeling off and it was looking like crap. Might have been my fault considering I haven't detailed the car in like forever. The Kia paint warranty is only 3 years so I was probably SOL on that so...
I ordered a set of carbon fiber look door handle covers off Ebay and they not only covered the defects but look sporty and compliment the cars DiNoc carbon fiber door pillars.

After my Elantra GT was totaled, I was planning on getting another Elantra. I was trying to hold out 'til the new MD/UD's came out, but wasn't able to. Then, that deal for the HD Elantra didn't work out. I actually almost got a Mazda3. After a lot of research I kept it in the Hyun-Kia family and "settled" for a Forte SX. It's a good looking car in a cool color and the 173 horses don't hurt, either. I haven't done a ton of mods but what I've done has made the car even better IMO.
Some Forte sexiness:

When I had my Elantra GT I pretty much did all my own oil changes. Since I've had my Forte SX though, I've had the dealer change the oil. I guess a combination of the fact my HOA doesn't like me doing the changes on my parking lot and/or my not so good back or just getting older accounts for the change.
Well, with Tammy going through this bad spell of health and other things, I kind of have neglected the car. Hell, I haven't even washed it in like 6 months! And you don't even know how long it's been since the oil was changed.
Anyhow I decided to take the plunge and just change it in front of my house. If the neighbors wanted to report me to the HOA so be it.
I haven't even so much as looked under the engine of the car before. But man, was I suprised. After this bad boy was up on the Rhino Ramps I slipped under the car to investigate. Holy crap. The oil filter and drain pan are easily in reach... with me barely even sliding under the car. Honestly, it took me 10 minutes after draining the oil. Easiest oil change ever. The only issue I ran into was that the dealer "mechanic" who put on the filter tightened it way too far.
Thankfully, I had my trusty oil filter socket wrench cap.

Since Sunday was the end of the "Season" for us, I figured I might as well get it swapped over while the weather is still nice.
So last night was "put it in winter mode" for the SeX. Here she was at the end of the season:
And an hour later:
Jeebus... I should have just bought some H&R springs for this thing.

So, in preparation for the upcoming season, I had ordered the Kinetic Motorsports exhaust. Nice piece, very quiet, nice pickup in power. Now that the air was getting out of the engine, I needed to get more into it. After looking into a dozen different CAI's and short rams I settled on the RoadRaceMotorsports "Mid-Ram"
http://roadracemotorsports.com/store/index...products_id=614 I chose this one for 2 main reasons: 1.) it was priced better than the competition ($190 shipped) and 2.) it came with ECU brackets so I could remove the entire stock setup. Injen and K&N both require the stock box and air ram/hose to stay installed to hold the ECU in place. Not a fan of ADDING weight to the car. In the end, this is what I took off/removed:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/bobnj...zps93b3adcb.mp4Here's the ECU Bracket:
And here's where the filter goes:
It removed 8 LBS off the nose. New parts weighed in at 1.4lbs. Old parts at 9.2lbs. Add in that, just like the XD, it now pulls to redline (6750 in this case compared to the Beta's 6200) with no drop in power as it reaches it. On top of that, you can actually hear what the engine is doing. No longer will it be called the "silent auto-x'er"!

This looks pretty promising. It'll be interesting to see if it retains the huge grille of the sedan, the small hatch grille or maybe something in between.
There should be a turbo option. Very cool looking wheels...

OK, so looks like the SeX has two basic options. Stance and Megan for coilovers with pillowball mounts. Stance is about $250-300 more than the Megan's, but they use an inverted monotube front strut.
Anyone had any experience (on anything) with either brand? The FF boyz LOVE the megan's, so that is one strike against them already.

Here's all the info on the upcoming Kia Forte sedan which makes it's US debut at the LA Show:
QUOTE
"The all-new Forte significantly raises the bar, offering upscale amenities and eye-catching appeal," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA. "When you combine exclusive available features like a ventilated driver's seat and UVO eServices in a car with such an attractive design, it's very clear the all-new Forte sets a new standard for the compact segment."
Set to arrive at Kia retailers in early 2013, the all-new Forte will represent the heart of KMA's small-car line-up, replacing the current Forte, which has been a sales success story since launching in 2009. Slotted between the Rio sub-compact sedan and the best-selling Optima mid-size sedan, the all-new Forte includes a raft of unexpected available premium features in a package that easily accommodates five passengers and their belongings.
Unexpected Premium Features
Offered in LX and EX trim levels, the all-new Forte proudly carries on Kia's reputation for offering premium features that redefine automotive segments. The LX model comes standard with steering wheel mounted audio controls, SiriusXMâ„¢ Satellite Radio, Bluetooth wireless technology, power windows, air conditioning and power heated outside mirrors among the many features that make the Forte stand out from its competition. The optional Popular Package adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry with remote trunk release and a sliding front armrest. The Eco Package includes Kia's ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system, dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation and unique "eco" badge.
Stepping up to the EX trim broadens Forte's appeal with additional comfort and convenience features. Kia's next-generation UVO in-vehicle infotainment system with eServices is standard and can now be integrated with an optional navigation system. Additional standard EX features include remote keyless entry with trunk opener, rear camera back-up display, a sliding center armrest and a cooling glove box. The new optional Flex Steer system allows the driver to choose between three distinct steering profiles: Comfort, Normal and Sport. Features found in the optional Premium Package include heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat with class-exclusive air-cooled ventilation, leather seat trim, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and push button start with Smart Key and a heated steering wheel. Opting for the Technology Package garners HID headlights, LED tail lights, a 4.2-inch color LCD cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation.
Enhanced Performance, Improved Ride and Handling
The all-new Forte offers spirited performance thanks to two advanced four-cylinder engines. The LX features a 1.8-liter powerplant, while the EX comes standard with a 2.0-liter engine. Both engines feature dual continuously variable valve timing and a lightweight intake manifold that reduces weight by 30 percent over a cast unit. The aluminum "bed plate" located below the cylinder block reduces engine NVH levels and improves block rigidity by 30 percent.
With 148 horsepower available at 6,500 rpm and 131 lb.-ft. of torque on tap at 4,700 rpm, the 1.8-liter MPI inline four-cylinder engine found in the LX routes power to the front wheels through either a standard six speed manual transmission or an optional six speed automatic gearbox.
Forte EX enhances the driving experience with a 173-horsepower (at 6,500 rpm) 2.0-liter inline four cylinder GDI engine. With a robust 154 lb.-ft. of torque available at 4,700 rpm, the EX comes standard with a six speed automatic.
The all-new Forte rides on a chassis that is longer (by 1.2 inches), lower (0.6 inches) and wider (0.2 inches) than the previous Forte sedan. With its 106.3-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the outgoing model, the all-new Forte rides on a McPherson strut front suspension and a coupled torsion beam rear axle. On-center steering feel is improved utilizing larger bushings and revised front suspension geometry. Electric power steering has replaced the hydraulic system from the previous Forte, reducing parasitic load. Optional Flex Steer puts the driver firmly in control with settings for Comfort, Normal and Sport, which vary steering effort at the touch of a steering wheel-mounted button.
The base LX manual rides on 195/65R-15 tires, while 205/55R-16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels are optional. The top-of-the-line EX is shod with the same 55-series tires. Low-profile 215/45-17 tires mounted on sporty 17-inch alloy wheels are optional.
Sport Sedan Design From California
With an aggressive stance, broad shoulders and a windshield rake that can only be described as sporty, the all-new Forte looks as good parked as it does carving through a remote canyon road. Influenced by European sport sedan styling, the Forte's modern aesthetic was born in California at Kia's American Design Center in Irvine.
Dramatically swept headlight lenses cut deeply into the front fenders and incorporate projector headlamps. LED positioning lights create distinct eyebrows, making the Forte instantly recognizable in a crowd. Gentle sculpting along the Forte's lower flanks taper the sheet metal inward, affording the car a taut, nimble appearance without diminishing its road presence. Around back, the up-kicked fender line and trunk design, with its deep horizontal crease, lend width and charisma while allowing the complex curves of the tail lights to flow over the rear haunches.
A Modern and Sophisticated Cabin
Opening the wide doors reveals a cabin sculpted in organic curves. Gentle ripples across the instrument panel convey serenity, as if small waves are radiating from a pebble dropped into a pond. The driver-centric cabin is canted 10 degrees and features high-quality materials and soft touch points. Large, easy-to-read instruments dominate the binnacle, and secondary controls fall easily to hand. The optional 4.2-inch color LCD screen nestled between the white-on-black gauges in the EX provides trip and ancillary vehicle information front and center to the driver. Tasteful chrome bezels ring the HVAC rotary knobs and the optional push-button start. Additional chrome accents, standard Bluetooth hands free phone integration and power windows, mirrors and door locks enhance the all-new Forte's premium feel. Optional leather seating trim, power sunroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control with rear seat vents and HID head lights take the Forte to new levels of sophistication.
The 2.0 direct injection option is nice. Too bad Hyundai doesn't offer that in the Elantra but maybe they will in the future.
Lots o' pics...

One way to change the look of the car is an aftermarket grille. Truthfully though, there's really nothing out there that I like. And price is a consideration. of course.
And, the reality is, I like the stock grille overall. I was thinking of one possible mod to the stock grille though.... blacking out the chrome with some quality gloss black auto vinyl like 3M 1080.
Here's a comparo I did with my stock grille and the gloss black look photoshopped. I think I like the black better, but, I'm not sure how easy it would be to wrap as a DIY. I know the basics (use a hair dryer and work the vinyl) but wonder if it would look perfect. I don't want to paint it because I want to be able to go back to stock easily, if needed.

I've had glossy black overlays on my B&C pillars for a while and they look cool but they scratched really easily. I decided to go a different route and covered them with 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber overlays. This stuff looks good and even has a real texture to it. I like the look, it's very subtle but a bit different:

The biggest gains in fun factor for the Elantra tend to be in suspension modding. Unless you want to go forced induction the gains you get from stuff like CAI's and new exhausts are not huge. But yeah, there are some power gains. The Forte SX has one huge advantage over my old GT hatchback. It has much more power right from the factory. 38 more HP and 35 more lb-ft. of torque to be exact. That propels the automatic version to 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds and the manual in around 7 seconds. These cars have some pep.
Ok, so IMO the Forte SX has good power. Handling-wise the car does well but stock Goodyears tires are so-so and hold it back.
One thing the car needs improved is the way it feels over bumpy or bad roads. The rear just gets way too unsettled. Combine a bump and a sharp turn and the car just isn't very poised. So... what to do?
Well, Ultra Racing to the rescue. These guys make a ton of bars and braces that tighten up the car. By reducing flex in the chassis the car fees more composed on bad roads and the biggest plus is that steering is quicker and handling is better... noticeably better for me even though I only added two bars so far.
I have added a front strut bar (that tightened the front a bit and made the steering feel better) and a rear lower bar that completely made the car feel more composed and reduced understeer. I plan on adding the front/mid brace to solidify things even more.
Here's the one piece strut bar on my car:
[attachment=4454:DSCF1238.jpg]
Here's the rear lower bar (although that's not my car) on a Forte SX:
The car almost rides like it's on rails around curves. 40MPH highway ramps can be taken at 70MPH with little to no drama.
These bars work.
