Since we've been asking about folks activities with their crooked-H wearing rides, why not ask about their brethren?
As for me, today I put new front rotors and pads on the wife's Rio. Passenger side went pretty smoothly, but I had to buy an impact driver to get the screws out of the rotor on the driver's side. Might be the easiest parts of the car to work on. After I got done, took it for a test drive (stops FANTASTIC now) and bumped up the tire pressures. Really need to get a set of alloys for that car.

Hey folks,
My girlfriend has a 2007 Kia Spectra5. We got it because it shares so much in common with my XD2 (plus we needed a hatch). Here's my question; I bought an 04' XD2 GT hatch as a parts car. Would the sway bar on that be an upgrade from the Spectra5's sway bar? I can't seem to find the diameter of the 07' vs the 04' GT anywhere. Thanks folks-

I'd like my next car to be a plug-in hybrid, and I love wagons. Oh, and I love my Optima! Something like this might be my next car!
http://www.autoevolution.com/news/kia-conf...deo-100084.htmlQUOTE
The CEO of Kia Motors Europe described the all-new Optima as the most beautiful car in its class. We still like the Mondeo more, but the promise of more Optima models in the near future got us really excited at the IAA.
During the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015 press conference, an Optima estate model was promised to those customers who want a bigger boot. The decision seems surprising, since the Optima has only been available in Europe for a few years. The ostentatious old model was designed for the American market, which never wants wagons.
But over in France, Germany or Britain, wagons account for the majority of mid-size model sales. How will a Kia version look? Pretty good, if the Sportspace concept car revealed in Geneva is any indication.
The South Korean study looks ready to battle against the likes of Insignia Tourer and Passat Variant if we consider the prototype’s dimensions - 4,855 mm (191.1 in) long, 1,870 mm (73.6 in) wide, 1,425 mm (56.1 in) tall. Plus, the wheelbase was stretched to 2,840 mm (111.8 in) which means that passengers in the back should benefit from extra space for their legs.
You won't be wanting in the power department either, as the 2-liter turbo of the Optima GT will make its way into the wagon, 245 hp and 6-speed automatic included.
Of course, most buyers will opt for the fuel-sipping 1.7-liter diesel option, but there will be an even more frugal Optima available. By 2020, a plug-in hybrid drivetrain will be ready for production.
We believe the mechanical goods will be shared with the Hyundai Sonata PHEV. A larger battery will allow the car to travel up to 22 miles (35 kilometers) on electricity. The Optima will call on the help of a 2.0 four-cylinder GDI gasoline engine that makes 154 horsepower and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque.

I bought this 2006 Kia Rio 5 SX with 42,000 miles for only $4500.
The owner, a friend of my GF's, wanted $6000 for it and I jokingly said that I would give him $4500 for it.
I didn't know he had been trying to privately sell it since December and he accepted my offer.
$4500 and it has a 10 year / 100,000 warranty. DAMN!
My GF gave her mom her 2006 Chevy Malibu Maxx (gas guzzler) and will be driving this Rio 5.
AND she has given me the green light to MOD it out.
...goes to look for the biggest tires I can put on it.
OH, and this was my 1000th post.

So the drivers CV axle started making noises the other day. Ordered one from Advance, with a new seal and fluid. Tore it down tonight only to find the wheel bearing was really bad. Started tearing THAT down and found someone has been in there before and fubar'd the hub itself.
Well crap. So I moved back up to the spark plugs. I was certain this car used platinum plugs, and that at 97k miles it was time to change them. Imagine my surprise to find they were the same NGK V-power plugs I used in the old SOHC Alpha in the accent. And imagine my disbelief in the fact that they were also original.... Yep. almost 100k miles on copper V-powers. The gap on cylinders one and 4 were at .085". Number 2 was at .095 and number three was over .100!
This furthers my belief that Alphas truly have the will to run no matter what. A little oil? OK. Some coolant? Good. Spark plugs? Meh.... overrated. We'll find a way, just turn the key.

Last night we made a family run to the grocery store to get some stuff. When we pulled into the driveway and stopped by the side door to unload, my wife looks over at me (we took her car) and asks "the brake pedal's not supposed to go to the floor, is it?" Well, no, hon... it's not. Unloaded the car, got everything and everyone inside the house and then I pulled the car into the garage for her (and so I can try to figure out what happened). As I'm walking back to the house I notice a puddle on the driveway. You guessed it: brake fluid.
Head back out to the garage, pop the hood and check the master cylinder: bone dry. Not a big surprise. Everything under the hood looks dry, though. No leak up here.
Fire up the compressor and pull off the LF wheel. Nothing looks too bad in here, either. But wait... I think I see a drip back there...
Put the wheel back on, drop it down and take the trouble light farther back. Ah, yes... here we are. The leak. Seems that at least one of the solid lines back to the rear wheels rusted through and finally popped when she stopped last night. I can't tell which one it is, but they're both corroded pretty badly. Certainly more trouble than the car's worth to try and fix it myself.
So now the search is on for a new vehicle. Likely going to be a minivan, what with 2 growing kids and all. That Rio is/was a pretty decent little bucket.

So after getting the wife's car back on the road, she went and put gas in it. Now when she has a full tank, I can smell gasoline in the garage. It also started throwing code P0441. Would the purge valve cause me to smell gas, or is it a leak in the top of the tank somewhere?

So I spent my NYD catching up on some past due maintenance on the two dailies. The wife's Rio has needed a new timing belt/belts and oil change for way too long. My car just needed an oil change. So I did the oil change on the Forte. Including jacking it up, finding the tools/drain pan, putting the stands under and changin the oil takes 10 minutes.... and you never have to move the drain pan for the oil drain and filter. Such fantastic engineering for long term maintenance.
Move on to the Rio. Since I had done one recently I knew they were easier than the old Hyundai belts. But man... this one was even easier. Crank pulley even slid right off. Total time to do the timing belt and accessory belts? 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then I spent an hour + cleaning up the engine bay. I wish I'd taken before/after pics because it is night and day difference.
More importantly, unlike the Tahoe, I used a 10mm, 12mm, 21mm for the lugnuts and a 22mm for the crank pulley. 4 sockets. total. God I love these things

So the old accent, pushing close t0 250k miles, started leaking p/s fluid. Along with the hail damage, the trans getting hard to get into 1st, the TOB making noise, the AC Compressor clutch bearing on it's way out and hte dead cat, I decided it's time to move on. We paid $2k for it almost 6 years ago, so IMO it's paid for itself over and over.
So we started looking for a suitable replacement. Main requirements for hte wife: A/C, p/w and p/l, 35mpg+, 100k or less and clean (read: not beat to hell). Our cap was $5k. we looked at a few different options, most were just beat to hell or had a bajillion miles. We had found an '07 Elantra SE manual an hour and a half away and were making plans to go look at it. It was pretty clean, had 106k miles and he was asking $5500 on CL. Before I asked for directions I decided to have one more look on hte local CL, and lo and behold a new car had popped up that afternoon. An '08 Rio, auto with p/w-p/l, AC asking $4500. Best part was it had 74k miles, and they were 10 miles from my house. I emailed for directions immediately.
Get there, car is dusty from sitting, tires are bald and I find out it's due for a timing belt because they hadn't done that. Oil was clean, trans fluid was still reddish brown and didn't smell the least bit burnt. Car drove good, little stuff that's no big deal etc.... I offer $4k, and they took it. We picked it up the next morning.
It needs a battery (Accent got a new one last October), tires (accent got those last october, same size), a passenger mirror glass and cleaned. Wife spent the last two days steam cleaning the seats/carpet and trunk. As soon as I get back from Lincoln, I'll finish swapping over the good stuff from the Accent to the Rio and get some pics for y'all.
Cliff's Notes: Accent is worn out, found 08 Rio with 74k miles for $4k. Great car, good price.

The wife's Rio has been sitting for a couple of weeks because of her recovery from the c-section. I went to fire it up today so we could drive it and the battery was dead. No big deal, I have a charger. Threw the charger on there, tried to fire it up, didn't hardly turn over. Okay, looks like the battery is the original so I'll get around to replacing it. Threw the charger on again just in case, and got it to turn over and fire. Alternator belt starts squealing immediately, then started smoking. Shut the car off, looked for the source of the smoke, and also found bits of belt dust everywhere. I'm thinking perhaps the alternator has seized, so I'm going to have to replace it as well.
Just how big a PIA is this going to be? I'm thinking that I'm going to go ahead and do the timing belt and water pump while I'm in there, but just looking at it makes me think it's going to be a multi-day project. Has anyone done one on a Rio/Accent? This is an '03, if it helps you out.

We were going to get the wife a 2011 touring but we both thought they were ugly and were not feature rich. Especially for $21,000. So today we went to Kia, looked at the Soul - SHE fell in love so we got it. Picking it up tomorrow @ $18K leather, alloys, sunroof, all interior cargo trays and carpet stuff. Pretty good deal. SHE likes it, thats all that matters. Trading in a 2002 Accent GLS Sedan for $1k which will drop it to $17k but not till we hand them the title. The accent has 102K miles on it.

The wifes Kia Soul got a oil change with some synthetic oil and oem filter. Swapped out the stock air filter and dropped in a K&N filter. Put some washer fluid in there and gave it a quick wash. Nothing special because I did some touch up work to the hood and a little paint to the hood nose under a month ago. I didn't want to wax it and buff off the paint.
Checked the tire pressure and vacuumed it a little.
Wife is happy and so am I

The wife's ride is due for a timing belt change. While I'm a veteran of changing one on a Beta engine, I've never done an Alpha. It looks a bit more daunting due to a couple things:
1) the A/C plumbing runs across that side of the block (and right where you need to access).
2) It actually has a pulley for each camshaft.
Since some of y'all have Accents or similar I'm wondering if I'm going to be cursing myself for even thinking of attempting this myself. I'm also figuring I'll tackle the water pump, since it's at 120k+.

Google and Kia partnership will bring Google Maps and Places to new cars this year
By Mat Smith posted Jan 2nd, 2013 at 7:20 AM 26
Korean car-maker Kia is set to give its UVO eServices telematics a huge shot in the arm, teaming up with Google to offer its next-generation navigation system. The new setup will debut in this year's Sorento CUV, which is scheduled to arrive in Q1. Kia's updated (once Microsoft-assisted) UVO system will allow users to send directions and locales from their smartphone (or the web) to your new ride. Baked-in Google Places will also inform you of your nearest dealership (even when you're already in that new Kia) while existing music management, hands-free features and improved voice recognition will all be wrapped into the same interface. Kia explains it all in the full press release after the break.
Kia Motors Announces Google Maps Integration to Enhance In-Car Connectivity
UVO Advances Kia's Infotainment and Telematics with the Utilization of Google Solutions - UVO eServices with Google functionality will debut in the new 2014 Kia Sorento, expected to go on sale during Q1 of 2013
- Map and POI destinations to be sent to the navigation system through Web and mobile
Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced it will work with Google to provide content and search-based solutions enabled by Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for the second-generation of the automaker's innovative UVO eServices telematics system. These new solutions will initially be introduced on the new 2014 Sorento CUV. The immediate integration of Google solutions will utilize Google Maps and Google Places to acquire driving directions and locate Points of Interest (POIs) in a seamless and organic manner. KMA and Google look forward to continuing to work together to bring innovative navigation solutions to enhance the connected car experience.
Available with the 2014 Sorento CUV, the new Google-powered UVO system will serve Kia owners whether they are in their cars or away from them. Enabled by the Send2Car feature, Kia owners can send a POI or destination to their car directly from the Google Maps via their Smartphone1 UVO app. From within the car, Kia owners will benefit from Google Places, which will provide POI and destination resources such as a dealership location, and Google Maps, which will provide directions to virtually anywhere and everywhere a car can travel.
"The newest iteration of the UVO platform is a breakthrough as one of the industry's first mobile pure app-based telematics systems, and now with the Google solutions and APIs, we take the platform to yet another level of enhancement for the Kia customer," said Henry Bzeih , head of the connected car program and chief technology strategist, KMA. "Due to the popularity and ease-of-use of Google Maps, owners can remain confident in the technology and information being delivered to them."
UVO continues to offer drivers hands-free mobile phone management capabilities and hands-free control of music from a variety of media sources, including CD, radio, USB, media player, and the Digital Jukebox. With UVO eServices, users will now be able to control the 2014 Sorento's on-board navigation system through voice commands when the vehicle is outfitted with the UVO eServices/navigation package. Also new with UVO eServices is an enhanced telematics suite that offers a number of maintenance and infotainment functions, including 911 Connect, enhanced Roadside Assist2, Automatic Diagnostics, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner's Smartphone equipped with the UVO eServices app available at no charge3.
Advanced Voice Recognition makes it simple to operate many of UVO eServices functions, including the Sorento's voice activated navigation system. USB connectivity allows users to download music files from a memory stick into the Digital Jukebox. The large eight-inch touch screen is easy to operate and incorporates Sorento's rear camera display4, Infinity®5 Premium Sound System and My POIs (personal Points of Interest via online maps), a feature that makes it easy to customize the owner's most visited locations. UVO eServices is compatible with iPhone®6 at launch and Android® phones are expected to be compatible in the second quarter of 2013.
Key Features of UVO eServices:
Google Integration: Utilization of Google Maps and Google Places to provide direction and location information.
eServices Guide: Accessed via the touch-screen or voice command, eServices Guide places a phone call via Bluetooth® hands free connectivity7 to a voice response system that explains UVO eServices to the driver in an interactive manner.
Car Care Web: Through the UVO eServices owner's portal, known as "Car Care Web," owners can check vehicle diagnostics, vehicle status, maintenance schedules, driving behavior, and schedule appointments with their preferred or nearby dealer via their home computer or mobile device. Owners also can earn awards for safe and eco-friendly driving viewable on Car Care Web should they rank high enough among their fellow UVO eServices owners.
My POI: Also available to UVO eServices owners is My POI, a feature that allows owners to send a destination from Google Maps through their Smartphone to their UVO eServices vehicle. In the convenience of their home or office, the customer selects a destination from the Web via Google Maps, once the customer's Smartphone receives the destination it will send the destination to the vehicle's navigation system the next time the Smartphone is paired via Bluetooth® wireless technology. In addition, all destinations sent from Google Maps will be copied to the owner's Car Care Web. (My POI is only available with UVO eServices vehicles equipped with navigation).
Vehicle Diagnostics: If UVO's eServices identifies a problem by way of the Automatic Diagnostics function, it will communicate the vehicle's issue(s) and its location to Kia's 24/7 call center or will schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership upon user request. With Manual Diagnostics, at the owner's preference, UVO eServices can connect the user with Kia's 24/7 call center or schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership, should an issue be found. Additionally, the user can take advantage of Scheduled Diagnostics from their Smartphone, setting a monthly diagnostic check of the vehicle. Upon completion, any issues found are automatically forwarded to Car Care Web.
911 Connect8: In case of an airbag deployment, the Crash Notification Assist function will alert emergency services. During a 10-second window, the driver has the option to cancel the call, otherwise UVO eServices will dial 9-1-1, read the vehicle's location out loud to the emergency services operator and allow the operator to speak with the vehicle occupants.
Parking Minder: If the driver happens to forget where they parked the car, the Parking Minder function helps find it by sending the location of the vehicle to the driver's phone. If preferred, the owner also can take pictures of the surrounding area for reference, write a reminder note, email his or her location and set an alarm if the car is parked at a meter. To guide the owner back, the UVO eServices Smartphone app will display the owner and the vehicle's locations on a map.
Following the introduction of UVO eServices in the Sorento, the system will be offered in other models in the Kia lineup, including the all-new 2014 Forte sedan.

I'm wondering how many different 2.0 mills the H/K empire has produced in the last several years.
After test driving a Soul recently, I started looking at specs.
Researching the Soul mill, I see KIA says it's 1999 cc, 164 HP @6500 and 148 TQ @ 4800.
The Forte, OTOH, has a 1998 cc motor rated 156 HP @6200 and 144 TQ @4300.
Finding bore x stroke and history has so far proved fruitless.
Referencing back to my 2007 Spectra, it has a 1975 cc engine rated at 138 HP @6000 and 136 TQ @4500.
Is either the Soul or Forte motor derived from the Spectra 1975cc, or are they new-sheets?
What Hyundais are/were these engines used in? What 2.0 motor does the Sonata/Optima T use? Is it one of the above-referenced?
Any site that discusses the history and derivations of these various engines would be interesting.
Thanks for any help with this.

Puzzled a bit by the Theta and Nu mills.
Theta powers the Forte, is 1998cc, 156HP @ 6200, 144TQ @ 4300.
Nu powers the Soul, is 1999cc, 164HP @ 6300, 148TQ @ 4800.
From what I've observed it seems the Nu shows more real world power and MPG. Highway MPG figures for the Forte (sedan Cd=.29) and Soul (Cd=.42 from the only source I could find) are very close.
Allied trannies and final drives would also be nice to know, as well as WFO shift points on the 6-speed autos.
Yes, I don't want much.
Thanks for any help, internet searches have turned up little so far.

One of the few flaws in our Spectra is the instruments. Grey on grey, and in many daylight conditions they're very hard to read.
How much trouble/expense would it be to backlight the speedo and tach?
I'd like the radio and clock to be more readable too, but something like the Accord's very readable main gauges would be nice.

Kia scored 3 out of the 10 vehicles, which is impressive.
Suprisingly, the MD/UD wasn't in the top 10.

NADAguides Most Versatile 2012 New Cars
The NADAguides Most Versatile Cars List was established to provide consumers with new cars currently on the market that offer tremendous fuel efficiency, features and versatility at a great value (under $20,000 including destination). Selected vehicles either met or outperformed their respective segment in the areas of fuel efficiency, warranty, and depreciation. Selected cars were rated on versatility criteria included such things as passenger capacity, legroom and all wheel drive capabilities. The initial selection was then filtered down based on the vehicle's standard and optional equipment offerings contributing to versatility and creature comfort, as well as unique features the vehicle offers.
1. 2012 Kia Rio SX Five Door
The eco-friendly Kia Rio SX five-door offers class-leading 138 horsepower and fuel economy of 40 MPG highway in the subcompact segment. Value-packed, the 2012 Rio is the first non-hybrid or non-luxury vehicle to offer Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology, which helps to reduce fuel consumption by turning the engine off when the vehicle is not in motion – such as at a stop light or in stop and go traffic – and automatically restarts when the driver releases the brake pedal.
