To hook up to the stock system, you'll need to tap into a speaker output, typically the rear speaker wires. You will either need an amp with a "line level input" or a line level adapter. I recommend picking the right amp, it's simpler and cleaner. You will need to splice your rear speaker wires. I had my old Saturn set up like that and it worked great.

What he said above. Since the spare tire isn't large, I'd recommend going with a shallow sub. I used a Pioneer 10" shallow and it fits well in the spare tire and there is plenty of air.

Here's a writeup when I installed my stereo. I tapped into the rear speaker wires behind the headunit, but you could tap into the rear speakers in the door instead if you'd prefer.

Me again with a follow up question. Adding price of sub and amp gets close to this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004P9HVRC?c...d_aw_sbs_auto_1

Smaller speaker, smaller sound but I am not an audiophile, just want to fill in more bass for an otherwise fine sounding system. I like DIY projects and have tackled all sorts, but I hate fiberglass mess.

Is work worth it if can buy all in unit for about same?

Thoughts on the all in units?

Looks cool. Not sure on the sound quality. But just letting you know my Pioneer 10" shallow in my spare tire isn't ground shattering bass but it fills the cabin well enough. (but the Pioneer shallows are rated really well in the bass quality).

This looks similar to what I had in my Mazda6
a lot of carmakers put these subwoofers on the high-end sound system of their cars.
This type of sub will bring a nice ambience feeling to your setup but can't compare to a real amp+sub
You would achieve similar gains on mid bass by simply putting better 2 way speakers in your doors

I remember Pioneer selling a similar (probably is the same one) model during the late 90s. If I remember correctly, the "sub(s)" in those units were 8-inchers. I remember listening to an installed unit in a Future Shop store back in the day and it sounded "thin". Maybe that's why Future Shop sold a lot of marked-down/open box units of that model right after.
