After bringing my GT to the dealer to get the recall fixed, I noticed that the emergency brake was pulled up to close to 70 degrees. I never pull it up that far, what is an acceptable level, ie, how many clicks. I usually go maybe 4 clicks, just a quick pull up.

I kinda do what you do gpagpa... but I've seen lots of pics of members cars where the brake is pulled much higher than what I do. I don't see any reason to pull it up as hard as I can. Maybe on a steep hill or something though...

So what do you other guys do?

I grew up working pedal-actuated parking brakes... with the console-mounted deal I don't get quite as much leverage, so I probably don't yank it up as hard as I should, but I've never had a problem with it, even on the sketchy brakes my old Sonata had.

If I'm parking in the garage or a parking lot, its a no brainer lift up, on a hill I put more of a conscience tug on it. Referring to the brake, does it just brake the rear tires or all four wheels? confused-scratchhead3.gif I would think that since the EB gets a ton of usage, it should stand up to repeated use. But I just did not feel comfortable releasing the EB when it was raised that high after leaving the dealership.

the hand brake only applies braking force to the rear wheels. Don't ask me how I know. signs-hehe.gif

come to think of it, I may have accidently forgot to release the EB and since the GT if FWD, I was pulling the car while the rear wheels were still engaged w/ the brake. wacko.gif It only happened once. I feared the damage I had done when I smelled somthing burning, luckily it was not a long drive.

My girlfriend laughs when I put the EB on... she says you only need it when you're on a hill, but I figure, what does it hurt to use it all of the time?

Who's right? Am I just wasting the life on my EB by using it whenever I park?

Back when I had an auto, I always engaged the ebrake anyway. It doesn't wear anything, as long as the discs remain stationary relative to the pads. Worst-case you get a little bit of cable stretch (speaking from the bicycling world, where "a little bit of cable stretch" can render brakes ineffective and make precise shifting into noisy guesswork), but Hyundai makes that really easy to adjust - just off the center console, everything's right there.

bottom line: can't hurt.

edited because I cna't spel.
