Taking the Elantra on another little trip

Later today I will be making another weekend trip to attend several racetracks in the area. Tomight I will go to my local roundy-round asphalt track (Southside Speedway) to watch the Late Model Stocks, mods and the rest of the supporting cast provide a night of fun. From there I am leaving to go to Summit Point West Virginia for the classic car race called The Jefferson. This year will be kind of special because the National Datsun 510 Sedan Club will be there and Peter Brock (One of the original GodFathers of Datsun Racing) will be the Grand Marshall. The Pinto Club of America will also be there and that will be special to me as when I married my wife of 41 years the first NEW car we bought was a 1972 Pinto Sprint. Saturday night I will be off to Winchester Speedway (a dirt roundy-round track) to watch the local Super Late Model hot dogs like, Booper Bear and Bo Fethers. On Sunday I will be back at Summit Point to watch the vintage, Austin Healeys, MGs, Morgans, Volvos and the rest test the 2 mile road course that is Summit Point.

I am going to bet that by Monday, my 64 year old body will be flying the white flag and asking me why the torture. :-)

Why is the steering vague/numb? '01-'06

One of the most obvious differences between my '03 GT and the new GTI is the steering feel. I never thought the Elantra's steering was particularly good, but I didn't feel how bad it was until I got used to something better. My question is... why?

1. Age. My Elantra now has 136k miles, and while some parts have been replaced (one tie-rod end, all struts), others never have. Are there bushings and mounts that age, does the steering rack develop more slop, etc?

2. Alignment. I do have about -1 camber all around, which is supposed to be better for cornering, not the straight-line driving I'm complaining about (unfortunately my commute changed significantly this year). I could get the alignment checked and make sure the toe is in enough.x

3. Design. Or, is it some fundamental design that reduces steering feel and precision?

Ethanol concerns bring customers to 'pure' stations

Granted... this is FoxNews... I thought this was a pretty good article.

Energy in America: Ethanol concerns bring customers to more costly 'pure' gas stations

VIDEO IN ORIGINAL FEED

York County, Pa. – When looking to fill up your tank, would you drive farther to pay more? Randy Hake's customers are doing just that, since he's the only gas station in York County, Pa., selling "pure" ethanol-free fuel.

"I get 20.1 miles to the gallon, in-town driving. I used to get 13," said Sue Cannon who drives 20 miles to Hake's from her home in Hanover, Pa.

Studies show straight gasoline gets 2 to 10 percent better gas mileage than fuel made with ethanol, an alcohol produced from corn. It costs about 20 cents more per gallon at the pump, but Cannon says paying more up front is worth it down the road. She started using "pure gas" five weeks ago, after paying $12,000 for repairs on her 2005 Nissan Pathfinder.

"I had to change two radiators and two transmissions," said Cannon, who blames the damage on ethanol.

Right now, gasoline sold at more than 95 percent of filling stations in the U.S. contains 10 percent ethanol, a blend known as E-10.

Ethanol was first added to gasoline 30 years ago. Bob Dinneen, CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, says it's an American success story, utilizing fuel sources like corn, reducing our dependence on foreign oil and reducing gas prices by $1.09 a gallon in 2011.

"Ethanol is an American-made product," Dinneen said. "We are creating jobs here. We are creating economic opportunity here. We are lowering gasoline prices here, as opposed to a pure gasoline that is lining the pockets of regimes in parts of the world that don't like us very much."

Now, the ethanol debate is heating up.

The ethanol industry petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to add 5 percent more ethanol to fuel, creating a mix known as E-15. The EPA recently approved it for use in cars made since 2001.

Proponents say E-15 will save drivers 5 cents more a gallon and is expected to be available as early as this summer.

However, a newly released two-year study suggests millions of cars and light trucks being driven today may not be able to handle the new fuel blend.

"Ethanol attracts water, and that can result in corrosion in the system," said Rayola Dougher from the American Petroleum Institute. "We're hitting what they're calling a blend wall, where you're required to use ever greater volumes of ethanol in the gas distribution system but it goes beyond what the cars are being designed for. And this is particularly an issue with E-15."

The study, sponsored by the oil industry group and automakers, tested eight engines found in millions of cars currently on U.S. roads. The study found two of the eight malfunctioned and suffered significant damage while fueled by E-15.

The U.S. Department of Energy, which tested E-15 on vehicles prior to the EPA's decision, disputes the study, calling it "unreliable and incomplete".

The American Petroleum Institute accuses the federal government of the same, and it is suing the EPA to force more research before E-15 becomes available at gas stations this summer. A decision is expected in June.

Regardless, Randy Hake says you won't find any corn-based gas products for sale at his filling station.

"We need to put it in our stomachs and our animals stomachs, rather than our gas tanks," Hake said.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/05/16/ethan.../#ixzz1v5L4vDx8

58mm throttle body for 2004 Elantra?

I've been searching around to see how much gains people have gotten by switching their TB from a 54mm to a 58mm TB. I saw on customization section of the website that you could gain 10 pounds of torque from switching to 58mm throttle body. Has anyone done this and seen a noticeable difference in power? I'm thinking of doing this mod after I get my CAI intake installed(First real engine mod after almost 4 years of ownership. )

Edit: For clarification, the reason I am asking is from what the guides say on this site, you can get some good gains from 58mm throttle bodies, but I don't see this subject come up often, so before I invest in it I wanted to see how effective it has been for others who have tried it. Thanks!

Make Interior lights turn after removing key from ignition?

Hello,

Is there a way to make the interior lights turn on automatically after removing your key from the ignition?

I was wondering this the other night when I had to grab something from the passenger seat after parking. I turned the car off, removed the key, and then I couldn't see anything because it was dark. I had to open my door to find what I was looking for. I was just wondering because my other cars (much older than my HD) have this feature. I was thinking maybe this was an easy mod.

Anyone do this?

2012 Elantra Dynamat Installation

Hello All,

I have recently purchased 2 bulk packs of Dynamat and a bunch of other audio equipment, JL Components Amps and Subs etc. to make my car sound like a mobile studio

The first step for me will me adding Dynamat to all four doors and the Trunk of my 2012 Elantra. Today I was going to get started, I removed all four door panels and to my surprise there is a thick plastic panel stoping me from accessing the metal shell of the door so I can install the Dynamat, also to make things even harder the door speakers are riveted in as opposed to screwed in.

So I took a trip to hmaservice.com to see how I am supposed to remove this plastic panel hindering my Dynamat Install. Hyundai calls this panel the "Door Module" and to my dismay it requires the removal of the window glass and outside door handel.

So my estimated 4 hour installation of dynamat and door speakers just turned into 8+ Hours.

Has anyone else out there attempted a dynamat install in their MD/UD elantra? Any Suggestions?

I will be using silvergls' Tutorial in the wiki section to install the speakers.

Hello all

I am thinking about purchasing new wheels for my car so i would like to sell the current ones to help offset the price. I have the 16" alloy wheels and tires off a 2012 Elantra GLS. The car only has 200 miles so they are brand new! I think $650 is a fair price since new tires are about $100 each on tirerack and the cheapest i found the rims online was $160 a piece. I would of course need to purchase my new wheels and tires before i can sell these but i would like to have a buyer before i do. Send me a PM please if you are interested. I live in the Northern Virginia area.

Thanks,
Chris

Amps for sale!

Hey all, I recently acquired a couple of amps. Bought them to power a sub box I was going to put under my seat... but there just isn't enough space, and I have too many other projects I'm working on right now. I fully tested both amps (crossovers, gain controls, filters, etc) and they both work great.

Jensen JPR285
A few scuffs from being stored, but the guy I bought it from said he never used it. I believe him- the connections are clean, and the inside of the amp is flawless.
$45 shipped.

JPA285
Power Output: 85 watts RMS X 2 channels into 4-ohms @ <
1% THD+N
Frequency Response: 10Hz to 100Hz (-3dB)
Signal to Noise Ratio: 100dBA below reference (Reference:
1 watt, 4-ohms)
Additional Power Output: 125 watts RMS X 2 channels into
2-ohms @ < 1% THD+N; 250 watts RMS X 1 channel
(bridged mono) into 4-ohms @ < 1% THD+N
Dynamic Power: 425 watts x 1 (bridged mono) into 4-ohms
@ < 1%THD+N
Dimensions: 280mm X 65mm X 330mm

Audiobahn A2300E
Chrome plated with a glass window so you can see inside of the amp. The only problem with this is the blue LED didn't come on when I powered it up. Didn't get into it, but I'm sure it could easily and cheaply be fixed/replaced if it really bothers you! Fan-cooled as well- These amps currently sell on eBay for between $100-$150.
$60 shipped.

(Still looking for specs)

Please let me know if you are interested!
Changed mind about autocrossing

Despite my first post about Elantras and being competitive in Autocrossing I have decided to take the plunge and do an autocross. I attended one yesterday (as a spectator) and saw the normal group of rodded up little hondas and the never ending flock of Miatas along with a highly modified Fiat X-19 running in E-mod, I think. I also saw people to talk with that I had not seen in 25 years when my wife and I were big into autocross. I was thinking the wrong way about doing an autocross, I was thinking like a early 20s person who could only be interested in winning and or being in contention for FTD as I once was when I ran my B-Modified BugEye Sprite years ago. I realized that I had forgotten where the fun really was at with all of the talking to and telling of a few lies to a great group of people who have the same interest in cars as I do.

Well, people, next month I will take the aged fire breathing (or perhaps make that still breathing) silver bullet of my 2002 Elantra GT and enter H-Stock. I might not win any trophies, H-O-W-E-V-E-R, that stock big body Volvo Station Wagon that was running H-Stock is in my cross hairs.

Ditch the Drums

Ok, I have an 05 gls with rear drums. It is time to replace the front pads and rotors. At the same time I would like to as the title states, ditch my rear drums in favor of discs. The performance difference and ease of maintenance make it a no brainer to me. The question is what do I need to pull this off? I would guess that I could try and find a 05 gt and pirate it. Any suggestions? I looked through the search engine last night til my eyes went blurry but did not find what I was looking for. Thanks in Advance.

Bigger isn't always better

Over at the Forte forum I'm a member of, it's the "in" thing to go to larger diameter wheels with lower offset and meatier tires to give the car a more aggressive stance. Lowering the offset make the wheels stick out more and it looks cool. Doing this can be very problematic. The main concern over there is wheel rub and yes, that is a concern. But... a bigger issue with a change like this (performance-wise) is unsprung weight and rotational mass. Bigger tires and wheels increase both.

Increasing unsprung weight makes the other suspension components work harder, so, even though you've gone bigger, handling may not really improve as much as you'd think. Regarding rotational mass, the heavier wheel/tire combo will actually cause the car to accelerate slower and the brakes will have to work harder.

The reality is, for better performance the best bet is to keep the tire size about the same as stock (but get grippier replacements) and get lightweight wheels.
That will increase performance. These huge tire/wheel "upgrades" are only an improvement in looks. And I'm not discussing slightly bigger/heavier here. This is more for people thinking about going up a couple sizes.

Here's an interesting page on rotational mass with a spreadsheet. The sheet allows you to enter in your car specs (weight, horse power, and torque) and two different wheels and tires to compare:

http://www.the-welters.com/racing/rotational.html

BMW, Hyundai in talks on engine alliance

* BMW, Hyundai may share engine development costs - source

* Hyundai denies holding cooperation talks

* Carmakers face enormous R&D costs to fulfil emission norms

By Hyunjoo Jin and Christiaan Hetzner

SEOUL/FRANKFURT, May 4 (Reuters) - German premium carmaker BMW and South Korean group Hyundai Motor are discussing a possible tie-up in engine development and other areas, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

"The talks are at early stages," the source said on condition of anonymity because the talks were confidential.

Another source told Reuters the two companies had discussed a comprehensive alliance, including jointly developing an engine and sharing development costs equally. He said he had no knowledge of whether the talks were still under way.

German industry publication Automobil Produktion reported on Thursday that Hyundai Motor Group chairman Chung Mong-koo's son and heir apparent, Chung Eui-sun, met top BMW managers in Munich to discuss sharing 1-2 billion euros ($1.3-$2.6 billion) engine development costs.

Neither carmaker would seem to need a deal - a recent global auto industry benchmarking study by Ernst & Young said Hyundai's 10.4 percent operating margin last year was only topped by the 11.7 percent earned at BMW.

BMW, developing a single engine architecture for all three, four and six-cylinder engines, has dismissed speculation it might look to add another technology partner beyond Peugeot , Toyota and possibly General Motors.

"Further co-operation partners are currently not foreseen," chief executive Norbert Reithofer told reporters on Thursday.

A spokesman for Hyundai Motor denied there were alliance talks or meetings between senior company officials, saying: "It is groundless".

Munich-based BMW would not comment on Friday.

The company has openly looked to sell BMW-built engines to rival carmakers and has a history of striking targeted, project-by-project cooperation deals that do not threaten its independence.

Analysts said some form of tie-up with Hyundai would yield benefits, since BMW's 1.6 million vehicle sales base means it lacks the scale effects of an Audi, which can share development costs with parent Volkswagen.

Developing a new generation of conventional and alternative propulsion systems that fulfil stricter EU carbon emission norms in 2020 and beyond are forcing carmakers to spend billions of euros on research and development.

EARTHQUAKE

"Even in the premium car industry you will find increased competition over costs. Enormous investments are required and BMW as a small carmaker relative to Volkswagen will be compelled to cooperate simply to save money," said Stefan Bratzel, Director of the Center of Automotive Management in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany.

"Hyundai is one of the most agile and dangerous competitors in the global mass market car industry today. But any strategic alliance with the Koreans would be tantamount to an earthquake since the Rover disaster still haunts BMW," he said, referring to the 1990s acquisition of the loss-making British carmaker that almost threatened BMW's very existence.

Last February, BMW agreed to expand its long-standing engine partnership with French mass market carmaker Peugeot beyond joint development of small four-cylinder petrol engines to include hybrid electric components.

But Peugeot has been struggling heavily to compete against the likes of Hyundai, losing money and burning billions in cash last year. It chose recently to enter an alliance with rival Opel's parent in the hopes of lowering costs.

<tag>source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/04/bmw-hyundai-idUSL4E8G40B020120504</tag>

I'm sure it'll go away but if not oh well.

An Exploding Airbag Branded An Audi Logo On This Man’s Arm.

Although car owners have been customizing their vehicles since the dawn of the automotive age, rarely has a car been known to customize its owner. Until now — when an Audi driver allegedly found his arm branded with the steering wheel's four-ring logo when the airbag deployed. I mean, getting a tattoo to show your love of things automotive is nothing new, but rarely does it happen without the person's consent.

But that's what appears to have happened to one Jalopnik reader who crashed his Audi A4 and when the airbag deployed, his arm supposedly caught the steering wheel logo at the perfect angle to leave an iconic memento of the accident. But, instead of crying over spilt Audi parts, the West Virginia resident proudly displayed his branded arm in this photo he posted on Facebook and sent to us.

Of course, accidents like this have been found, in the past, to be hoaxes — this looks more like an impact bruise than a permanent "branding."

<tag>source: http://jalopnik.com/5907298/an-exploding-airbag-branded-an-audi-logo-on-this-mans-arm</tag>

Elantra 2010 gls stereo specifications

Hey guys n gals,

I've been looking at audio/gps/bluetooth systems to install in place of my factory stereo on my new-to-me 2010 Elantra. I've found some really nice ones that I think would do everything I want- a couple of Pioneers (notably AVIC Z130BT) but I can't figure out how to tell if these units will fit in my car. Frye's says they will, but Amazon says they won't. And since the models I'm looking at are last years, since I want voice control for the bluetooth and the new ones dont' have it, I'm looking on line. BUT, I don't want to order on line and then have it not fit. I've been looking on line for specifications on the factory stereos- dimensions and such, to compare to what's out there. I can't even find anything that says double din or single din, like the online stuff says. Can anyone help me?
Or for that matter, can anyone recommend a specific make/model that they've used, or seen used, that they liked? I looked at Hyundave's info, and that looks like a nice system, but he had to do custom cutting, which I don't know I want to do.
I'm wanting to keep the functions I already have- ie, satellite availability- if possible, but add gps, bluetooth/ handsfree, voice control. Please, please, gang, flood me with info!!! I am a total newbie to this world, and I have a lot to learn! Lol!!

Thanks!!!

Sheri

BTW- I'd also love to add the steering wheel audio controls. Is there a part number to order it from a dealership? I know when I bought the car they said that was not an option, but I saw on here someone doing it with another year elantra. No parts available that I was able to find for my 2010, though...

Hyundai to install throttle override systems in all vehicles

Hyundai Motor Co. said it will equip all of its new vehicles with electronic throttle-override technology beginning this month’s production run. The feature, the car maker said, will allow drivers to control a vehicle’s speed and bring it to a stop even in so-called runaway throttle situations. Because electronic throttle links have replaced the cable or pushrod linkages that used to control engine speed, there is a possibility that electronic malfunctions can cause the driver to lose control of the engine’s speed.

Numerous cases of alleged unintended acceleration have made consumers especially wary of the potential hazards of the electronic or “drive by wire” systems that increasingly control our vehicles. Hyundai said the likelihood of problems with these systems is extremely low, but it is seeking to reassure drivers that they will be able to keep their cars from getting away from them if something goes wrong with the throttle.

“With Hyundai’s brake pedal throttle override capability, any brake pedal input by the driver, even with a runaway throttle condition, completely overrides any throttle malfunction,” said Robert Babcock, director of certification and compliance affairs for Hyundai’s technical center. “It is no longer possible to have increasing engine power once the brake pedal is depressed by the driver,” he said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering including a brake pedal throttle override requirement in its motor vehicle regulations but has not yet approved a rule.

<tag>source: http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/2012/05/02/hyundai-to-equip-its-cars-with-throttle-override-system/</tag>

Throttle body scam.... er.... spacer.

I know these things are usually a scam, like that tornado thing but I'm always on the quest to find something that will help with my MPG. I came upon this TB spacer on sharkracing: http://www.sharkracing.com/acecart/bin/sho...;cate=011600000 and usually that site is pretty good with selling good quality stuff from my experience with them and I've never seen one designed specifically for the Elantra before. It claims a 2 - 4 hp increase, whoopty doo, I don't care about that and I doubt I'd notice 4 hp but the 5 - 10% increase in MPG I would notice.

I did a bit of google magic and found plenty of arguments for and against these, here's two that showed some dyno results: http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/intake-spac...html#post945206 http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/6842312-post311.html

Probability of this being a scam product?

Opinions on car audio set-ups

Hey all, I'm looking for some insight from the audio pros out there...

Right now, I'm currently running a Pioneer HU hooked up to a Clarion 7-band EQ. I have Pioneer 6X9s in the rear and JL audio components up front. That's all powered with an Alpine 4-channel amp. I absolutely love the way my music sounds. In my opinion, Pioneer makes the best HU when it comes to sound clarity and flexibility, and the EQ makes it even better. The rear 6X9s give me a ton of good clean bass, but I'd like to tone them down a little and get a dedicated sub.

I used to have a single 12" Type E in the trunk, but I wanted to get more trunk space back, so I got rid of it. I still need my trunk space, and I'm not into huge booming bass anymore. I listen to jazz, classic rock, movie soundtracks, classical, etc. What I want to do is custom-build a box that fits under the passenger seat and then put a shallow-mount 8" sub in it. With the sub being in the car, it won't need to be very loud- and if an 8" is tuned properly, it can hit pretty low.

I also don't want to add another amp if possible.. I feel like I'm taxing my alternator already with the the HU, EQ, amp, and plethora of other accessories I've added to the car over the years. I know many people run 5 speakers to a 4-channel amp- would this be feasible for me? Opinions and suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

Need feedback on an aftermarket product

Hey all,
I am a brand new proud owner of a 2010 Elantra. It didn't come with all the whistles and bells I wanted, but I could not pass it up with the price they offered me, and the fabulous warranties (Hyundai Certified Pre-owned). What I want to know is this: I want to put in an aftermarket bluetooth system, and I found a product on the internet that looks great. BUT it is coming out of China, and the info on it is limited from what I can find- no user reviews to speak of, although the basic product seems to be available for sale on lots of websites.
Here's a link: http://www.cnbuynet.com/hyundai-elantra-07...pod-p-1385.html

Soooo... does anyone out there have any experience on these? Any thoughts? I thought, even if I have to pay someone double the cost to install it, to have GPS, handsfree voice activated bluetooth, backup camera, and all the other features mentioned, it would be worth it. AS LONG AS the product is what they claim it to be.

Let me know gang!!! I am prepared to be stunned and delighted by my new (to me) car!

Sheri

Nissan studied the Sonata while designing their newest Altima

Nissan execs admitted they looked heavily at the Sonata during the design process of the 2013 Altima.
Veloster owner considering trading for Elantra Limited or a couple of other choices

Hello guys and gals. I'm currently driving a '12 Veloster Style and Tech Pkg 6spd that I'vd had for about 7 months and am considering trading for a true four door economy minded sedan. I actually worked for Hyundai as a salesman for a number of years so I tried to buy an Elantra last summer but literally could not find one anywhere close in the color combo I wanted with the options I wanted (black on black with Tech Pkg). I checked our allocation list for a couple of weeks and dealers in the surrounding states but the car I wanted wasn't to be found and then our very first Veloster came in that I immediately bought so voila. At the time I was commuting nearly 100 miles a day round trip so I had to have a car that was all about high interstate fuel economy. The Veloster is a cool little car but I would like to have a true four door for space reasons and something with a little more in the way of creature comforts (power seat, leather, navi, etc). Fortunately, with the still very low availability of Velosters I can sell mine for right at what I owe and break even so I'm back to looking at the Elantra. I'm inclined to go with a 2013 to get the power driver seat and dual climate control as well as having a brand brand new car. Having worked for Hyundai and still in the car business for another high line manufacturer I understand that the fuel economy is dependent on how one drives so I know all about the relative optimism of the 40mpg claim. To wrap it up, I'm considering a '13 Elantra Limited with Tech Pkg, a '12 Mazda 3i Grand Touring (Skyactiv model) and possibly a Focus Hatchback Titanium. While I'm looking for fuel mileage I want a car with literally all the bells and whistles in that model and am curious with those of you that own the current generation Elantra thought when you compared those or other cars in your purchase.

I look forward to hearing everyones thoughts on this and also offering any advice I can to anyone as a salesperson in the business for about 8 years now. Thanks!!

Elantras and Autocross

I have read where a couple of members autocross their Elantras, I am going to guess that an Elantra would run in the SCCA
H-Stock class. I have not autocrossed for a few years, the last time being in 2006 and 2007 when I found that my Scion tC was not all that competitive in H-Stock, having to run against some of the lower powered Hondas and the stock MGs as well as the rear wheel drive celicas. Having driven the 02 Elantra GT for the past seven or eight months I can not believe that it would hold it's own with top flight H-Stock cars. I might take the car to an autocross this year, however, I have no real expectations of being able to compete with the better cars in the class. Not only do I think that there are other quicker cars, but in the current rules, you almost have to have at least 1,500 dollars in special DOT rated racing type tires as well as fairly high dollar shocks.

I am not knocking the Elantra, just giving my opinion. If any of you actively compete in any type of competition please chime in and give your opinion of your car as opposed to those you have to compete against.

Chevrolet Captiva

I see at least a dozen of these Captivas driving around down here in Florida. Most have had Tennessee license plates, but this one had Florida plates. Just happened to be right in front of me at a stop light so I was able to snap a couple pictures.

While searching online, it appears that the Captiva is made by Daewoo but has not been available in USA. Browsing the chevy website it doesn't come up. Anyone else seen one of these around or know how/where they're getting them? They look smaller than an Equinox.
